Drinking Tea Daily Can Lower Your Dementia Risk

in #health7 years ago

Drinking tea has many health benefits and now there’s one more to add. According to the National University of Singapore (NUS), just a cup of tea every day can keep dementia away. This is especially effective for those who are at risk of suffering from the disease due to being genetically predisposed.

Lower Cognitive Decline Risk

The study, which was published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health, and Aging, involved 957 seniors who were at least 55 years old. After the completion of the research, it was discovered that daily consumption of tea can lower the risk of cognitive decline in older people by up to 50%. Meanwhile, the study also concluded that those who are carriers of the gene APOE e4 who are genetically at risk of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s, may experience up to 86% reduction of risk.

While the study was performed on older Chinese people, the results don’t mean they cannot be applied to other races. It is true that there are pharmacological therapies and the use of drugs to prevent neurocognitive disorders, but the strategies aren’t often pleasing for the patients and those at risk. There are some side effects to worry about and the medications aren’t that affordable. Drinking tea daily to reduce dementia risk is so easy, non-intrusive, and definitely inexpensive.

How Does Tea Protect Us Against Dementia?

Tea is one of the most consumed drinks all over the world. According to researchers, the neuoroprotective properties of the tea aren’t limited to a certain type of tea. Just make sure that you go for one that’s brewed from tea leaves. Whether it is black, green, or oolong, you can drink the tea daily to reduce memory decline.

Tea has many health benefits, including protecting our brain from some disorders. This is possible through its bioactive compounds, including:

*L-theanine
*Thearubigins
*Theaflavins
*Catechins

The above-mentioned compounds can help fight inflammation. They also contain antioxidant potential to keep the brain protected against neurodegeneration and vascular damage, which are both common as we age.

There were also studies in the past that showed how tea could truly have protective effects on the brain. For instance, in Alzheimer’s patients, extracts of green tea as well as the compound known as resveratrol can disrupt the clumping of amyloid protein in the brain. This type of protein clumps and attaches itself onto the brain cell nerves, which cause them to die.

While further research is needed to prove that drinking tea is effective in reducing the risk of dementia, simply drinking tea every day is a healthy addition to your diet.
