13 Easy Halloween Costumes you can Throw Together Tonight

Are you suddenly scrambling to figure out a last minute halloween costume? (I am slowly raising my hand...) Some years I go all out and have my costume fine tuned weeks in advance. For example... last year I had a killer Rey costume that was actually handmade and I added a few of my own details. I had so many people want to take my picture to show their Star Wars loving kids or spouses.

This year however, I just haven't been in the mood to go through all the effort. I was totally going to skip dressing up...but my FOMO just kicked in and I've decided to find an easy and last minute costume I can pull together tonight. I thought that I might not be the only in search of a costume that can be thrown together with minimal effort tonight. My work closes down for two hours every halloween for a costume contest, pumpkin carving, and potluck lunch. There are about 90 of us in the office... so it is always a lot of fun! Not to mention, I think a group of us are going out for beers after work and our costumes.

After a bit of searching on the internet - these are my top pics! I wanted costumes that could be assembled using mostly items that are laying around the house, or could be easily acquired at a grocery or department store. I'm trying to avoid digging through the costume section at Value Village for an overpriced cheap looking costume.

Most of these are a bit more female focused because that is what I was searching for - but some of these are pretty gender neutral.

1. A Bag of Jelly Beans

How cute is this? All you need is a clear trash bag, some balloons and a printer. You can print the Jelly Belly logo and tape it to the outside of the bag. I'm not entirely sure how they sececure the bottom - but I imagine you could tape the bottom of the bag to the lowest levels of balloons.

2. Sugar Mama

Who doesn't love a punny costume? If you have a baby carrier and a bag of sugar... this couldn't be easier! Mom jeans not required.

3. A Bunch of Grapes

This could be done with a partner or friend using both green and purple balloons - or would still be fun as a solo costume. Wear all black underneath and tape a bunch of green or purple balloons to you! For an extra touch - wear a bit of fake foliage on your head. You could either twist it into a crown or just stick some in your hair. If you have to sit at work with your costume... this one may not be friend.

4. Frida Kahlo

Dressing up as Frida Kahlo only requires a few simple steps. Pin some silk flowers to your hair, fill in your eyebrows with some brow liner, and wear some bright clothing and statement jewelry. Don’t forget some bold feminism.

5. A Bag of "M&M's"

This one really might be the easiest yet. It just requires a black trash bag and waaaay too many photos of the rapper Eminem. Just cut holes for your head and arms and then tape photos you printed of Eminem.

6. Mary Poppins

You may have all of these pieces sitting in your closet! The most important items are the black umbrella, black hat, and red bow tie. The exact bag, skirt and shirt used can vary based on what you have. If you are missing a couple pieces, you could probably find them easily at a department or consignment store.

7. Pumpkin Pi

Ok guys, so this is actually a photo of me a few years ago! I was having one of those Oh Sh*t moments the night before Halloween (apparently this is a pattern) and I went for this super easy costume. An orange shirt and a printed Pi symbol to make some pumpkin pie! If you have a green hat, that would help take it up a notch. I didn't think about that until afterwards!

8. Starbucks Cup

This outfit can come together pretty easily, but will require a quick trip to Starbucks and maybe a trip to a department store if you need clothing items. Pin a cup lid to your hair by holes through the plastic for the bobby pin, or glue the lid to a cheap headband. The cup sleeve could be made with a paper grocery bag and a printed/cutout Starbucks logo. Next just throw on a white dress or white shirt/skirt combo and some leggings! The green color is cute here, but honestly white could work as well and would probably be easier to find.

9. Identity Thief

This one is sure to get a chuckle out of people. All you need is a burglars mask and a bunch of name tags. A burglar mask could probably be made pretty quickly with some black paper and electrical tape.

10. Chip on your Shoulder

This has got to be the laziest costume I've ever seen! Got a bag of chips laying around the house? Cool, tape it to your shoulder. DONE.

11. Rosie the Riveter

Got a jean shirt, red bandanna and red lipstick? Great, your set! This costume is iconic and always a fun one to wear.

12. A Candy Rapper

Pull on that sweat suit, a straight billed hat, some chains if you have them and tape candy wrappers to your outfit. You might have to eat a lot candy to make this happen (your welcome).

13. Time for a couples costume! Double Stuffed Oreos

This one looks a smidge more complicated, but I couldn't resist including it! A quick trip to your local department store to grab some white beanies and some supplies for the oreo are all you need. I imagine it could be made with large black paper, or maybe spray painting some cardboard. This one might be worth bookmarking for a future year if you aren't feeling ambitions enough to tackle it this year.
