Statists & the War Against the Greater Good

in #greater8 years ago

What would you be willing to sacrifice in order to meet the needs of the greater good? Since the beginning of human existence the greater good argument has been used as a trump card when it comes to all conversations involving changes in our laws, policies, and most importantly the way we live our lives.

Anytime I get into extended debates with statists over the immorality of governments it always boils down to them claiming government is a necessary evil or that they will support its existence for the "greater good". Well, I think it's time we go to war against the greater good and stop letting people use unknown ends to justify clearly immoral means. This is exactly why I don't like to paint a picture for people of what an ancap society may look like, because it is besides the point. Yes, we can give our best guesses as to how the free market will provide certain products/services in the absence of government but ultimately we don't know for sure how it's going to look. The only thing we do know is that we'd rather have everyone competing to provide these products/services instead of just one central authority forcing us to purchase from them. As soon as we start trying to paint what we think a voluntary society would look like statists start looking for potential problems and then we end up focusing on addressing hypotheticals instead of focusing on what's really important, morality of actions.

In short, sometimes it's not important how the cotton is going to get picked when slavery ends. Let's stop focusing on the ends and start focusing on the morality of actions on an individual level.
