Eat your dirt with your carrots!steemCreated with Sketch.

Went out this afternoon to do some thinning and I thought I would share what me and my family got up to. Got a salads worth of spinach and a little treat of small carrots from the raised beds. At the rate these carrots have grown since August we should have some good sized ones in November. My son thought we should feast on the freshly dug carrots dirt and all. He made sure Mom and Dad did the same! My son is almost 2 and half years old, and loves to do whatever me our my wife does.

There were some upset moments today when he couldn't immediately pick the rest of the thinned carrots but we talked and mostly distracted him out of it. We had left the tomatoes for him for just this emergency, so we got him into picking them. He just loves to help outside in the garden and is very serious so he needs some coercing if his work is a little to destructive! Once he got picking the tomatoes he forgot about those carrots, at least for today, we'll see if he remembers them tomorrow...

Is the dirt okay to eat? What about like bacteria and microbes?

Everything but freshly sterilized things have bacteria and microbes.
IN truth the more exposure one has to bacteria the stronger the immune system. This is part of why animals are so healthy and humans not.
Sterile environments are actually very unhealthy and detract from health rather than improve it.
Not only can dirt have healthy microbes in it but also trace minerals. Most animals eat some amounts of dirt regularly, intuitively knowing that it is healthy.
Of course there are circumstances where dirt could be dangerous, like if it was dirt that had a dead diseased animal lying on it....But why would you eat dirt like that???
Also there are plenty of solutions for "bad bacteria" like this post here https://steemit.com/health/@gardenofeden/water-quality-is-really-important-we-share-our-easy-and-effective-options-for-water-purification-which-can-save-your-life-in-the

Small amounts won't hurt you usually, and will improve your gut flora, best case scenario.
