Growing sprouts at home

in #food8 years ago

My family has been growing sprouts at home for a number of years. It's great to be able to have something fresh to eat anytime of year. We use a space saving tray and rack system that we got on sale for $10. For this article we also used a mason jar with screen method that is cheaper and for larger sprout types a better alternative to the small trays.

We use 1 Tbsp. of seeds per tray.

We use 2 cups of water to fill the seed trays but for a mason jar fill the jar. Soak overnight.

Empty the water in the morning.
Rinse the seeds again and then repeat the process in the evening. Once you have sprouts rinse the sprouts one last time.
Blot dry on paper towels before storing in the fridge up to one week.
This is a very inexpensive way to start to grow your own food, hope you have fun growing and eating your own sprouts soon!

This is a great use for any of your garden produce that has gone to seed, too -- like radishes, kale, broccoli, and arugula. Even if you were growing hybrid plants, their seeds will still make great sprouts and microgreens.

Great tip, ty!

You're welcome. It's nice to get free seeds for sprouting.

I love sunflower seed, mung, and aduki bean sprouts. Among many others. Easy and super delicious.

We will have to try those, thanks for the suggestion @amy-goodrich

I just learned about this yesterday while listening to a Joel Salatin interview. (If you're not familiar with Joel, please look him up. Great knowledge on organic farming and permaculture). I just ordered my set, and I'm very excited about this simple method of producing healthy food - at home!

Yes JS is a good fellow. Thanks for the comment @thenextturn
