Getting to Know Herbs: Codonopsis (Poor Man's Ginseng)

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)

Also known as dang shen or poor man's ginseng, codonopsis is flowering perennial climber native to Asia. It's important in traditional Chinese medicine, with the carrot-shaped root being the key part. The medicinal use is as an adaptogen and stimulant to help temporarily relieve symptoms of stress like mental fatigue and weakness and to boost the immune system.

Key Points

  • widely used in TCM
  • replaced ginseng use in China due to costs and communist export rules
  • boosts immune system, used for cancer radiation treatment
  • helps with physical and mental fatigue

History

The recorded use of the root in China is from 1751. Some argue that ancient texts referring to ginseng are actually referring to codonopsis, but it can't be proven.

After the communist revolution, ginseng was reserved for export, codonopsis was instead used in traditional formulations. Ginseng is available now, but it's still 10 times more expensive.

Where is it found?

Codonopsis is found in Asia, including cHina, Japan, Russian Far East, Kazakhstan, India, Iran, Indochina, Indonesia and more.

It grows in forests, meadows and in shrubby areas.

What's it used for?

The root is used to treat HIV infection and to protect cancer patients against side effects of radiation treatment, boost the immune system, treat weakness, loss of appetite (anorexia), chronic diarrhea, shortness of breath, noticeable heartbeat (palpitations), asthma, cough, thirst, tiredness, gas, weak arms and legs, bloatedness, diarrhea, vomiting, prolapse of the uterus, and diabetes.

It's been used to help nursing mothers produce milk, and the nutrients are considered nourishing to babies. It's been given to babies who are teething for it's hard and sweet tasting root.

While codonopsis shares a similar taste and tonifying properties as ginseng, ginseng can raise blood pressure, codonopsis lowers it.

Are there any risks?

Codonopsis might slow blood clotting and increase bleeding. Those with bleeding disorders or going into surgery should avoid it. Use during pregnancy isn't known to be harmful.

Wow, wow, wow, being that it can be used for HIV infections, why are NGOs and governments still spending Billions of dollars on antirectroviral drugs?
I'm sorry, this is not the place to discuss this but i still don't understand what men could do for money, alot of people are dieing because they cannot afford the expensive antirectroviral drugs, and there exist an alternative that is not even as expensive as ginseng.

I don't know if it's more or less effective than the drugs they make, that they can then own and make money from :P

The making of drugs forms a system worse than a monopoly. It is a facist system. The government legalizes their business no matter how many ill effects they cause. Then the same government attacks natural answers and supresses knowledge.

They don't care how many people they kill because Ellysium is almost here for them. This winter is going to be a long one. It sure is getting colder much sooner than normal. Just keep prepping. 6months of food, water, and ammo. With all of this knowledge tho you are a huge help.

So it boosts the immune system and can be used to combat AIDS and cancer. Interesting thank you my friend@krnel

Well, against the radiation from cancer treatment at least. And it appears to inhibit tumor growth:

One in vitro study using the HO-8910 (human ovarian cancer) cell line noted that treatment with an acidic polysaccharide derived from the roots appeared to reduce the invasion and migration potential of the tumor cell while suppressing proliferation; thought to be through a reduction in CD44 expression, a cellular adhesion molecule that had its expression (as a percentage of total cells) decreased dose-dependently in response to the acidic polysaccharide.[9] Cell survival after 48 hour incubation reached 81.72% of baseline at 25ug/mL, and appeared to reach 39.35% at 200ug/mL, suggestive of apoptotic capabilities as well.[9] Inhibition of tumor growth has been noted in mice injected with tumor cells in response to oral administration of 50 or 100mg/kg of one of two polysaccharides in the range of 22.86-56.73% inhibition; the active control of cyclophosphamide at 30mg/kg injected achieved 63.67% inhibition.[20]

great & impressive

Is it really?

Interesting! One wouldn't know which would be more effective, this or ginseng itself?

I'm not sure, haven't looked into ginseng, I'm not sure I have a picture of it to do a post ;)

Pictures abound on the internet. I believe you can use one and reference the source, right?

Interesting! I worked for a doctor for over 6 years who was next to a normal doctor also a certified specialist in alternative medicine .
But i never heard about this root/plant.

We did use other plants and herbs to boost the immune system and special medicine (herbal based) to slow down the growth of cancer cells.

I will bring this to his attention see if he can look into this and maybe use it in his practice!
