Wildcrafted Medicine: The Incredible Healing Properties of Sow ThistlesteemCreated with Sketch.

Every aspect of life is better when you are healthy and thriving!

To that end, we are happy to share our knowledge of wildcrafted medicine. Nature herself creates a remedy for all of Man's ailments! Plants grow right up out of the ground for free--often with little to no attention--and have incredible properties to heal the human body.

Many common "weeds" are actually healthful powerhouses! To pull up and discard these super plants (or worse yet, to douse them with poisonous chemicals) is to forsake their magnificent abilities to fortify and revitalize the humanimal. We hope to reconnect you with primordial wisdom to empower you with alternatives for health and wellness.

Today, we reintroduce you to SOW THISTLE, a relative of dandelion that pops up almost everywhere. It grows in gardens, along rivers, in sidewalks, alleys, and fields, and on almost every continent. Behold:

We hope you are inspired to eat your "weeds"!

Happy TRAIL!

Thanks for highlighting Sow-Thistles! They are so under-appreciated. I'm with you in hoping that more folks get to know these great plants. I like both the Common Sow-thistle (Sonchus oleraceus) and the Prickly Sow-Thistle (Sonchus asper). I do like them best when they are young and tender, before they send up a central flower-stalk. But I like their flowerbuds, too -- good and meaty to chew!

The Prickly Sow-thistle is great just blanched a bit. But they are sturdy enough for casseroles, too! Here's a link to a video where I use them to make Poached Fish with Prickly Sow-Thistle. But they are good plain, too! :D Enjoy your Sow-Thistles!

You're welcome, @haphazard-hstead, and as usual thanks for your thoughtful reply! We've been including our sow thistle in frittatas and soups lately :)

That means you are eating well, for sure! :D That's so great!

Wildcrafting has intrigued me since I was a child! Thanks for the informative post.

Thanks @cut-the-l00p! We eat both sow thistle and prickly lettuce, and can attest that both "weeds" are edible and delicious!

I will look for this, in the summer, in my area @gardenofeden. Thanks for sharing. I think it will be a nice addition to a green smoothie. :)

You're welcome, @rebeccaryan! Older plants can be very bitter. Definitely suggest picking young leaves, and mixing them with other yummy things in a smoothie will be a great way to get their healthful benefits!

Great post!
Also here in Italy we have it, it's very common in Spring :)
In italian is called "Cardo Mariano"

Thank you, @andrew0! It is a very abundant plant!
