Revved Up Ragtag, Part 4

in #gardening7 years ago

Work has been keeping me very busy recently, so any Revved Up Ragtag projects have to be easy and quick.

I opted for taking a bite out of the mess I refer to as the Jungle. As you can see, there is 'stuff' under all those vines. The goal was to scope out what, if anything, was salvageable in the mix. That small bare spot with the log sticking out in the front was my starting point.

I found a mangled tomato cage,

a couple of old tires,

and some plastic trim remnants from a long-ago home-improvement project.

That 'log' in the front turned out to be two substantial poles, which I think are rafter poles, from the metal shed that used to occupy that corner. They may be usable, so I tucked them out of the way along the back fence.

With all the non-organic materials removed and the old rafter poles set aside, I opened up the largest of the cardboard boxes I'd scrounged - this one's from the furniture store. I placed it as far back into the Jungle as I could. I anchored one end with a tire, then maneuvered the rest so that the whole front corner was covered. There were two stumps from previous attempts at sapling control, that I used as anchors on the other edge. (I have plans for removing the stumps at a later time. For now, this will work.)

The remaining tire was used to provide additional weight to make sure the whole thing stays put. I'd also folded up the front edge of the cardboard to conform with the contour of the area. It should make it easier to mow around, also.

Pretty good for just over an hour's worth of work!

I feel ya! Work has been keeping me busy too but my garden is my priority right now. I can't wait to see what magic your little green thumb creates!

Can't wait to see it all finished :)

Oh goodness aunt-deb, you are a determined woman. The jungle will turn out to be the best part of the garden... I mean what loot with those tires and poles. Looks like you will be feeding the masses before long! What else is in there?
We find all sorts of trash in the yard every time we scratch around. Lol! 🐓🐓

LOL! I like that! Determined sounds so much better than stubborn. ;~D

I have an idea of a few more things in there that will hopefully come in handy... a stack of shingles and some kind of tarp all wadded up. I'm not sure where it'll all end up, but that's where the fun is - figuring out how they can be re-purposed.

I don't trust the soil in that spot to grow anything directly in the ground, because there were all sorts of chemicals in that shed, plus part of the floor was just chunks of concrete. I'm thinking along the lines of a small greenhouse, using the existing footprint of the old structure. It does get a nice blast of morning sun in that corner...

I have never thought of you as stubborn. I do get a kick out of your many unusual ideas. The thing is... that they usually work out really well. Those shingles would make a fine path way from one area to the next. I am sure you have something else in mind. Lol!
Are you finished with your 4 friends? 🐓🐓

Yeah, stubborn has it's ups 'n downs, so I work on being as flexible as I can and only dig my heels in on major stuff.

Ooooh, I like that idea for the shingles! I'll have to see how many there are. There is only a small corner of the stack exposed, so it'll be a surprise. Now, you've got me thinking of options. It's been drizzling here for the past day & half, so further excavation will have to wait. Dangit...

Finished up early with the crested crew, as the folks got back sooner than expected. It happens that way sometimes. ;~P

How many layers of cardboard are you putting into the ragtag jungle?
I'm sure the frenzied four will miss you. Glad to be of assistance. Lol 🐓🐓

Just one layer for right now, just to see how much it takes to cover the area. I'm hoping to get enough boxes to do at least two layers, but three would be better for this spot. Time to hit up the furniture store again, methinks...

It's nice because you can see a big change right away. You are taking back the jungle! This is a really fun post for people because it's like one of those makeover shows. I just can't wait to see the transformation.

Fun project. I'll be checking in to see it develop.

Good point and it's spot on! It helps keep the momentum going even thought we're heading into winter. With all the of leaves now falling, it's easier to see where I'm walking. I'm sure there are ankle-breaking spots buried in some of that stuff. (Bad scenario for a pet-sitter...)

I'm glad I've got y'all to brainstorm with, because I'm not exactly sure where it's going to end up. A small greenhouse is my first inclination - we'll see...!

Those tires would be great for a variety of different plants in a garden. Or for DIY decorations. Looks like you did good for a days work.

I was pondering what I could use them for. Planters was one. Or they may just serve as a base for stacking wood to dry - if and when I get it chopped down to size. They can be pretty useful, plus they're small enough that I can handle them easily.

Here's hoping I can get some more mileage out of them. [Sorry, I couldn't resist...grin!]
