Revved Up Ragtag, Part 2

in #gardening7 years ago

What do a funeral home, a furniture store and a dumpster have in common?

Scrounged resources for revving up my Ragtag Yard!

Yup, that's cardboard alright.

The one on the bottom is a protective insert used in shipping coffins to funeral homes.

The one in the middle served a similar function for a large piece of furniture.

The last one was a bonus. I spotted it when I was disposing of 'dog walk debris' in a dumpster. I couldn't resist that pristine flattened box perched on top!

What in the world has me chasing cardboard in such unlikely places?

Mostly, it's because large pieces of cardboard are hard to come by, so I had to expand my range a bit. Granted, the furniture store was not much of a long-shot. The issue there is getting to it before they shred it. I got lucky with this one, plus now they know I'm looking. Helps to have an inside track.

The one from the dumpster came from a local gas station which uses lots of cups, so it's tall. That was, for want of a better term, a windfall.

But, a funeral home? Really?

Well, why not...? Ragtag requires thinking 'outside the box'!

I'll admit this was a stretch, but as I talked to the manager, she warmed to the idea of what I was going to use them for. As a matter of fact, she called me back within two days to let me know she'd found some.

So, what's the big deal about cardboard?

That's going to have to wait for the next post, because I haven't gotten that far yet!

You are a hoot! I just finished reading part one of your latest series. I can guess what you are up to. Think you are brilliant with your rag tag outside the box ways. The genius was the funeral parlor. Never would have though about that one! Glad you are having a good time. Life is an adventure ! 🐓🐓

Thanks, hon! This is what happens when I have excess amounts of time to think - like driving between jobs. Sometimes all it takes is the noticing the right sign when pondering a problem. Life is totally an adventure!!

Truly @mother2chicks life is an adventure
.. how are the chicks fairing... 😋

Those girls did seem a bit mystified by Irma. We are still at about 4 eggs a day which is half what they were laying before the storm.
Managed to put a few seeds into my potted garden yesterday. Maybe we will see some result in a couple of weeks. Thanks for asking. We are getting right back on track . Haven't started looking for cardboard yet! Lol. 🐓🐓

Wonderful... You doing so great. Keep it up. Check out my blog posts...I did updated a lot on poultry...eggshells a d fi fertilizers... Your comments and additions will be appreciated 😎

Nice post @aunt-deb
You doin great in your blog posts

Cardboard, good stuff for killing grass. :-)

Funeral home - outside the box...EPIC LOL!!!!

;~P

I wondered if anyone would get that. Good job!!

The thing in common is all can have treasures! I used to work at a funeral home as a teen and I would always be gifted things from the surviving families. Sometimes things are places beside dumpsters free to a good home and
furniture stores have awesome pieces to revamp and call your own!
But will be using this cardboard as a weed controlling base in your garden?

You're right! It all depends on where your interest lies and the things that catch your eye from that perspective. I've even put things out by the mailbox and they always find new homes! I love to see that circle complete and get satisfaction from knowing it's valued.

And, yes, that will be one of the uses. ;~}

Can't wait to see what the other uses are! Lovely eve to you friend :)

lol. I don't think I've ever heard of someone dumpster diving at a funeral home but the image makes me laugh. lol. I have a relative who always said bury me in a cardboard box and save money on the funeral....now I know where to find the box.

That IS picture... although the dumpster was behind a gas station. (I was emptying my dog poo collection from earlier walks.) Although, in essence I had the funeral home manager pre-emptively doing if for me!

LOL at the relative's opinion. They do have a point...
(p.s. The biggest of the three boxes came from the furniture store. Just fyi. )
