The Sword Art Online series has been around for a while. Fatal Bullet will be the tenth part and will follow the story of Hollow Realization . The games are based on an animated series in which people are stuck in the virtual world, which is somewhat reminiscent of The Matrix 's story. The difference is only that the players of the VR games have to be aware and do everything to escape.

Third-person virtual reality

In Sword Art Online there are several virtual worlds and actually Sword Art Online is one of them. Gun Gale Online is the third world and that is what Fatal Bullet is all about. GMO is about competition between players. Since the story is pretty deep and far-fetched, it can deter newcomers. Fortunately, Bandai Namco has an answer to that.

In Sword Art Online Fatal Bullet you play as yourself. You are the protagonist, not someone you creep into the skin. With your own character, which you make at the beginning of the game, you get to know the game world and the people. Not in VR, because SAO is just a third-person RPG. You know at least as much as the main character itself and that is really nice.

So you do not have to play previous parts if we can believe the publisher. There is a background story that you can learn a lot about if you need it. Yet you can also skip this and freshly enter the series. With the choice of many external options you then set up an alter ego. Your own new adventure starts here.

Niche

That adventure is very Japanese, because the concept - which among the sober is accompanied by a clear anime style. Over the top hairstyles, big eyes, cell shading and the characteristic way in which characters move are all part of it. Fatal Bullet is therefore not for everyone. Is anime your thing, then you're fine here.

The question remains to what extent this is going to catch on in the West. Titles such as Metal Gear Solid or Dragon Ball are more 'established', but Sword Art Online exudes the same in everything: few concessions to address the West more. Yet there are elements present that we can use.

Fatal Bullet has many RPG options such as skills to develop. Which exactly these are not entirely clear yet. You can also shoot a lot, because of course, action can not be missed. There are new weapons in the game with which you can tackle robots, monsters and other people. In trailers we saw laser swords and miniguns pass by, so it has to be quite varied.

Does dated

In addition to the main missions, there are also sidequests to follow, as befits a typical RPG. According to developer Dimps, they run parallel to the story in terms of level and you are free to do what you want. So, are you going into the dungeons or are you exploring other areas? Players can collect bounties and rewards and join a player versus player mode with up to eight men. Through the world there are treasure chests with loot like weapons to pimp your equipment.

A good, smooth steering is desirable to walk everywhere with pleasure. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Fatal Bullet. Just walking up a staircase is awkward and your character moves as if he had just been mistreated during a shiatsu massage, very stiff. Sometimes you will accidentally walk too far past your cover, which you can not lean against as is the case in many third person shooters.

The graphics are also of a significantly low level. In the Sword Art Online universe, one virtual world looks better than the other, but that does not have to be an excuse. Fatal Bullet comes out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, but that is not to be denied. In that respect, the game looks more like something that should have been released for the previous generation of consoles.

Preliminary Conclusion

The RPG is already out in about three months, so the impression we received during the Sword Art Online Fatal Bullet has to say a lot about the end result. And that is unfortunately not great. Fatal Bullet is not the first in the series, but does not know how to lift the level. As a new character you step into Gun Gale Online, so players without knowledge can also pick up this part.
But whether that will really happen in bulk is doubtful. The graphics are dated, the gameplay is stiff and you have to stick to the concept. In any case, it is certainly not convincing. If the VRMMORPG Gun Gale Online from Fatal Bullet is the 'future of gaming', father can take time out.
