Sonic Forces Review - The cool final boss fights ensure quite some nice moments

Sonic has finally been defeated by Dr. Eggman and it's up to your homemade character to save the day with the help of Sonic's friends. Sonic Forces shows how well a modern Sonic game can be, but does so by placing before short levels where not all elements equally well come into their own.

Do it yourself

What Sonic Forces is supposed to be is the character creator and that is the best thing about the game. For me it was a dream come true. You choose a variety, adapt it and then dress it to taste. From a stylish Sega look (clothing from character from other Sega games) to the most wacky creations (weird wigs, crazy glasses, funny shirts, etc.). Nothing is so cool to see your homemade creation sprinting through levels and defeating numerous mechanical enemies with Sonic. At the end of the level they give each other a high-five and they both take on a cool pose. How cool is that?

Three flavors

There are three types of levels in Sonic Forces and they all look beautiful. Take the occasional time to stop and enjoy the background. It will be obvious how much detail has been put into each level, both on foreground and background. There are the Modern and Classic Sonic levels and you can also play with the relevant Sonic. Classic Sonic plays as always from left to right but feels strange in terms of control. This makes it faster than in the older Sonic games, but sometimes it is not even fast enough to run up a hill. It feels and plays very strange but after a few levels you get used to it. Modern Soniclevels are fairly linear. These are mainly aimed at being able to boost as much as possible in order to play out a level in a flash. Classic Sonic levels are more focused on finding the fastest way to reach the level. Alternative roads, secret corridors, you name it. Both types of levels have their own charm, although it still feels strange that Modern Sonic is many times faster than Classic Sonic.

Wispons

The third type of level lets you take control of your own creation and comes with a unique gameplay element called the Wispon. With this weapon you take over the different powers from Wisps. Wisps are power-ups in the form of small alien creatures that each have their own element. For example, you have Fire. With the Fire Wispon you walk around with a portable flamethrower. For example, Lightning gives you an electric whip again. The Wispon you decide to use allows you to approach levels in a separate way. Switching between Wispons and revisiting older levels is also a plus if you want to play everything free.

Small problems

All three types of levels have a typical Sonic problem. Because of the high speed with which you run through the levels you sometimes see some enemies not arriving at all. That in turn results in losing all your rings. Or you can go off and play a large part of a level again. This can sometimes be incredibly unfair and frustrating. Especially because you can not do anything about it. Fortunately, this is somewhat compensated by the fact that this game does not work with lives. That saves a lot of worry and prevents annoying Game Over screens. One thing that all three types of levels have in common are the short playing time of the levels. In itself that is not a big problem because it is less time consuming to visit a level again.

Boss above boss

The biggest surprise of Sonic Forces are the battles with the different bosses. Normally a fairly weak point in previous Sonic games but in Forces I really enjoyed it. They are challenging and do not last too long. Once again, the backgrounds look spectacular, especially against the new bad character Infinite. As soon as he hits you he bends the reality so that you are completely lost. Unfortunately, there are few bosses fighting and they are too soon over.

Conclusion

Besides the fact that you can finally create your own character and play with it, Sonic Forces has enough charm so it has not become a big deal. The graphics are colorful, the cutscenes are neatly finished and the music is old-fashioned upbeat. Sega has done his best to put well-known Sonic songs in a new, modern way and has succeeded very hard. The game largely consists of fun levels and the cool final boss fights ensure quite some nice moments. Unfortunately, not all elements come out perfectly and the game has already been played out before it really gets going.
