Breaking, swiping and finishing people. All of this mediaeval enjoyment is open to everyone from February, The first game of Warhorse Studios is a big one. Originating from a Kickstarter project, the game eventually became even bigger than what was initially targeted. The battle scene is in fact the gigantic area of medieval Bohemia in the Czech Republic!

History lesson

During the Kingdom Come Deliverance preview you could take a look at the playing world of the role-playing game and let go with three big quests. Because the game revolves around the story and historical accuracy of the Middle Ages then, so also with well-known characters from the region who lived in those days.

For example, the first quest, called Awakening, puts you in direct contact with an old king who has been kicked out of his castle. The exact details of you as the main character have been skipped for convenience, but it is immediately clear that nobody takes you as a blacksmith seriously. So you will have to work up from the bottom of the ladder. Or is not it?

Who was born for a dime

Kingdom Come Deliverance is not about working up a blacksmith to become king. You will always be 'only' a servant of a leader. It is true that as you get further into the game you get better equipment at your disposal, but you will never get further than foot soldier. Let alone that you can chop a dragon, a giant and a whole battalion of soldiers all by yourself in Skyrim!

Using better things does not mean that you become an immortal hero. You may be hit once more often before you die, but each sword is just as deadly as before. An advantage of this is that your weapons are just as strong. You may die in three slaps, but fortunately too. It works both ways!

Stop the clocks

Thus, many players will find the game difficult. The realism of lethality of weapons also translates to wearing equipment or wanting to connect wounds. Warhorse Studios is clear about this: in Kingdom Come you can not say 'stop' and stop the time to browse through your inventory. Changing armor is only possible before you set off and make a bandage during a fight.

As a result, you will have to think first if you have the right stuff in your pocket for encamping a camp full of enemies. And you will have to repeat a certain mission regularly because in the first minutes you were already hit by an arrow and slowly bleeding to death. But once again, your enemies can get just as fast a number of life points by taking a drink backwards.

Swishing and swabbing

If that does not make it difficult enough, there is also the interesting and new combat system. One that will take a lot of time to master, since the tutorial is fairly limited. Fortunately, we can already try to explain what you can expect!

The game has two forms of fighting. Being with a sword or with a bow. In the case of the bow, you can fire different types of arrows if you have a bow at your disposal. But this is made quite difficult by not having a crosshair: seeing where you shoot is a skill that you will have to learn!

The first arrow is therefore always an indication from which you can improve. If the arrow drops too early, you will have to aim higher or use a different type of arrow that has less drop. The more you use the bow, the faster you can unlock perks that help you with the use of bow and arrow.

Sword fighting is about choosing an angle to jump from (eight directions) depending on how the enemy tries to block your attacks. A swipe of an opponent can be countered by holding a button all the time (but then it costs you stamina), or by pressing at the right time once (after which you can act as a reaction).

Practice makes perfect

In the case of parrying, it is not as difficult as in Dark Souls, where you have to think about when to hit the button. A small shield will come into the picture when you can place a perfect parry, but you will still have to be quick. The more you practice on the weak bandits on the roads in the game, the easier it will be in situations where you have to fight for your life!

In this way you will also find out that you can exclude weaknesses from enemies. A soldier with heavy armor on his body will be able to save a lot of swords, but his head is unprotected. One good blow and the opponent is instantly dead. But here too: the same means for you. So you better wear a helmet at all times!

Every advantage has its disadvantage!

During the Kingdom Come Deliverance preview, it appeared that many small but clever features had been devised for this. Depending on the helmet you wear, you also have a visor that will close during fights. But compared to that extra protection is that you see a lot less! Every advantage has its disadvantage!

A disadvantage of the strong but heavy armor is that you are an easy target for archers. One arrow in a kneecap and you can forget to walk upright. Fortunately, you can always still serve as gatekeepers in Skyrim, who are also always talking about 'I take an arrow to the knee'.

On adventure

Fighting outside you can happily fold your visor up, so you can look your eyes out. There is enough to see in the Bohemia of the Middle Ages. Giant forests, small villages and large cities are all accessible to walk through. It is also possible to travel directly to fast, but that involves risks.

Just like in Dragon Age, everything can happen on the go. A robbery of bandits, an arbitrary corpse that, on closer inspection, ensures that you are accused of murder or an important location where you can accomplish a task.

Optimize

Going for a walk yourself or riding a horse is also possible. It must be said here that during the Kingdom Come Deliverance preview the game did not play very smoothly on the PC. All settings were at maximum, but with an RX 480 the framerate remained well below 60 at all times. Warhorse says to spend the time until the launch to optimize the game, so there is still something to be gained.

The coming months will also be used to review a number of features once again. During the Kingdom Come Deliverance preview we were told that there was still disagreement about whether or not you should use bandages during battles. A single mistake could be expensive. Because the game revolves around the story and do not build a bandage during battles, the problem will be greatly increased, it will still be looked at.

Preliminary Conclusion

With a new combat system and a focus on the storyline, Kingdom Come Deliverance takes a completely different path than Bannerlord, a title that is often compared to the game. Although the level of difficulty may seem high, every enemy has a weakness that can be used to bring him down. It is only him in having to find that weakness.
