Reasons why DOOM does not need a story

It's almost so, November 10th, It's been a while since I played DOOM, but that does not mean I'm less likely to release on the Switch. That made me think, what makes Doom so good? It is not the first game in which the shooting of hordes monsters is central. There's one thing I'm sure: Doom should not have the story, but what's the distinctive factor in this game?

The grim atmosphere

Whether you're in the UAC facility, outside of the cool mountains of Mars, or between the demons in hell, id Sofware hits the nail when it comes to atmosphere. From the moment you wake up in the Mars-infested Marsh Facility, it feels like you crawl into Doomguy's skin. When you get your first gun and you attract the well-known Praetor Suit, you know what to do. You are the one who will close the gates to hell forever.

The blooming walls and the ominous candles give the hallways of the UAC facility a grim atmosphere and as the game progresses, the demonic rituals become darker only. That's why Mars's outdoor air really feels like you would expect. I therefore think that hell in DOOM is one of the best interpretations of hell I have ever seen.

The glorious glory kills

Cutscenes in the middle of close combat fights do not seem to be a good idea at first, but this is something that DOOM can get along with. In fact, it feels good and tasty. The moment you hit a demon under a certain percentage of his health points, it's possible to perform a glory kill. In a smooth animation and without hesitation you destroy the demon in seconds. For example, there are separate animations for the various enemies, favor and situations. This way you break enemies in the most horrendous way, saw them through your chain saw or blunt your head flat on the floor. Not only is it a pleasure to do, but the game also rewards you with extra ammo, armor and health.

The inciting secrets

In addition to all quick action and bloody environments, DOOM also has a lot of secrets. For example, there are several Doomguys, classic maps and secret rooms available. These incredibly hard to find secrets are very fun to discover. The Doomguys model all have a different package and once you pick them up, the first thing you do is give a box to the mini Doomguy. Of the classical maps I only found one, but man, what was that fat? From one to the other second you will find in a totally different game, namely the original DOOM. Besides being terrible to change game, it is also rewarding, because in this area, like in the secret rooms, you are rewarded with weapons and ammunition.

These are the points that DOOM makes unique to me. What has caused DOOM to be such a successful experience, or not? In any case, I certainly know one thing. DOOM, I'll play again on the Nintendo Switch. I hope, therefore, that the game will surprise me as much as it did the first time.

DOOM will appear on November 10th for the Nintendo Switch.
