What is the name of a party with our famous plumber Mario in the lead? Right: Mario Party! Who does not get a smile from ear to ear when you can play various mini-games with family or friends? In this Mario Party: The Top 100 review you can read all about the new party game for the 3DS!

The Mario Party series has been around for more than twenty years! In concrete terms, this means that ten Mario Party games have appeared on various Nintendo platforms, with the last Mario Party 10 for the Wii U. Games that are all stuffed with mini-games. Think of the first skating to reach the finish, the first in a life to climb up, stay on a moving platform, bowling and so on.

Mario Party The Top 100 offers the best 100 games of the past twenty years. That does not sound wrong, but still you think quickly: why on the 3DS and not on the Switch? Because would not it be much more fun to be able to play mini-games with friends on a big screen and then take them along on the newest console? It is a mystery why Nintendo has not chosen this and it ensures that you do not immediately warm up for a 3DS version.

Minigame packages

Moreover, the best thing about Mario Party games was playing a board game. So that the mini-games were played as part of a larger whole. Why would you want that to just play mini-games in a row, right? Fortunately that is not entirely the case, because in the game you have the option 'Board game' sitting as game mode.

In it you can choose how long a game lasts (10-50 turns) and then choose a package from which the mini-games exist. Think of packages like 'Nintendo 64 package', Race package, Sports package, GameCube package and much more. And then you can also put together your own packages.

It is only an option that you do on your own with computer-controlled characters. The game still has a multiplayer mode, but unfortunately we could not test this with someone who still had a 3DS with the game. So the question is whether you could play such a board game with friends.

A great loss is that you can not play online with strangers at all. That would make the 3DS title so much more interesting. Because how hilarious would it be if you could go to the internet before going to sleep and then play a funny mini-game? So that this is not possible.

Single-player game?

Mario Party: The Top 100 seems to focus more than other Mario Party games, which were mainly aimed at the fun of several people, to focus on the einzelgänger. This is shown by the fact that there is a play mode for one person: Minigame Islands. This is a kind of campaign that you only go through and where a player completes four worlds that are jam-packed with mini-games!

That is surprisingly fun! Where you might initially be used to playing Mario Party with friends and think "why should I do that alone?" The single player experience is still very entertaining. It is clear that you get the best of the best served, where it is a feast of recognition when you have played previous parts.

Just a lot of fun!

Before you start a mini-game, an icon indicates on which Nintendo platform the game was playable, for example the GameCube. It is briefly reported what you have to do and then you can go for the profit, or just practice. The only thing that could have done better here was a clearer explanation.

Some Mario games take you a bit more by the hand than the other and it seems as if sometimes too much is assumed that people know it. There is a message about what you have to do, but sometimes too concise. But once you are playing, you will enjoy intensely, because what is that single player fun!

Not very difficult, but very entertaining and especially very versatile. You do not feel like playing a similar mini-game for a moment or that there is not enough variation. And then suddenly you understand why a Mario Party The Top 100 has been released. Quite rightly even.

Usefulness of the Amiibo

It is also nice to see how the Amiibo can also be used very useful. Because once you are through your life, you can scan an Amiibo, such as Yoshi or Mario, on the handheld, after which you get an extra life. Genius! Not so handy on the road, because no one is going to take Amiibo with them, but it certainly comes in handy when you are playing at home!

And it is also nice that you unlock various mini-games in other game modes via that single player. So you actually get the feeling of playing for something. Not only to see the credits rolling across your screen, but also through the replay value of the other modes.

There are also the 'Tournament' modes, where you play 3 or 5 minigames for a championship, or 'Meerkamp' where you play 5 or 10 minigames in a row to try and improve a high score. And of course you can play the minigames or practice in the 100 Minigames mode.

Conclusion

Although the feeling remains that you want to do this with or against someone, such as online, Mario Party The Top 100 game has become a surprisingly fun game and plays away wonderfully. But as a player you also know that there was more to it: more replay value with online support and the choice for the 3DS remains strange. The Switch had been nicer!
And then the price-quality ticket of 40 euros must also be viewed critically. Is that worth it or not? Not quite. It's a lot of money for a single player of a few hours and if you do not have anyone else to play with, the question is why you should buy this.
On the other hand, you may wonder whether you will ever dust all your Nintendo gaming consoles to select the best party games in them? And what you get served in this 3DS game is very good. Secretly, the game is a party.

➕ Unlock minigames
➕ Great added value from Amiibo
➕ Much diversity
➕ Mode to play alone very nice

➖ No online option against friends
➖ Short single player playing time
➖ Why not a Switch version?
