Game Review: Steamworld Dig 2 Review - More Metroid than Minecraft

Whoever sees a few screenshots of Steamworld Dig 2 will soon think of Minecraft. Just like in the famous block game, you have to dig under the earth's crust to search for materials for new upgrades. In practice, however, this indie game has a lot more common with, for example, Metroid.

In Steamworld Dig 2 you are looking for the main player of the previous part. It has mysteriously disappeared into an old mine shaft, which means that there is only one way to find him: by digging. With a pitcher you can tear off all sides, to pave your way to old cave systems.

During your journey through the underground you do not collect dozens of ore as in other dig games. Instead, you will only save precious gems in your inventory, which you can sell again in the village in the upper world. That money will then be used to purchase new upgrades to make your digging more efficient. For example, you can give your torch longer light so you can stay under the ground for longer, or upgrade your pitcher to wipe faster ore.

Areas are not randomly generated as in construction games, but pre-designed by the developer. That sounds like a small detail, but has a significant impact on the course of the game. Upgrades spread by the game make other locations accessible, so you have to travel back and forth to explore the full mine. It's a form of exploration we often see in games like Metroid and Castlevania. This is surprisingly good at Steamworld Dig 2.

In the mines you occasionally stumble into remote caves, with their own minilevels on their own. These may be the best parts of the game. Because they are out of the big game world, you often find the most creative environment puzzles. For example, you should selectively leave bombs to open the right path, or cause a chain reaction to reach a gemstone.

This combination of fun levels, exploration and new upgrades makes you always excited to continue playing. There is always a corner of the game world where you just can not get along, without knowing exactly what you need to continue your journey there. And that only detects you by continuing to play.

For a long time, however, you will not dig into the caves of Steamworld Dig 2. If you race through the story, you'll be there after an hour or four. You can put in the game for about ten hours if you want to find all upgrades and explore every corner. In itself an excellent playing time for a 20 euro game.

Steamworld Dig 2 is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.

Conclusion

Steamworld Dig 2 lets you dig as in Minecraft, as you explore like in Castlevania and Metroid. Combine that with the surprisingly cool self-contained cave levels and you have a solid adventure, which you can definitely take for an hour or ten.
