PAPER MARIO : COLOR SPLASH | EXCLUSIVE GAME REVIEW

in #gaming7 years ago

Hey Steemians,It's your Blockchain gamer here again guess what? Another review! Shocking I know. Anyway with Paper Mario: Color Splash currently in development I wanted to review a previous game in the series,

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. This game came out on the GameCube on July 22, 2004, I was lucky enough to get it for Christmas that same year.

First off, for those of you who never had a GameCube and/or the chance to play it for whatever reason, I really feel bad for you, because a lot of great games came out for it not including remakes of old favorites.

Anyway, If you ask anyone who has played Thousand Year Door, they will tell you that it is the best game in the series. For those of you who played Sticker Star and haven’t played any of the previous games, I recommend you do and don’t shoot the series down because of one bad title.

Rating.

This game was rated E for everyone or 3+ in the European version, for mild cartoon violence, there’s really nothing even questionable about the rating other than the main town where the story take place. It’s known as Rogueport and there’s a gallows standing up in the center of the town, but no use crying over spilt milk right?

Story.

Source

Peach finds a treasure map in a town called Rogueport and sends a letter to Mario with the map asking him if he would accompany her on this traitorous journey. Mario obviously complies and heads for Rogueport posthaste. When he gets there Peach is nowhere to be found and instead Mario meets up with a friends girl named Goombella and they set off to search for Princess Peach and the treasure.

The treasure is locked behind a door that sleeps quietly under the town of Rogueport, and the only way to open it is to collect all seven crystal stars that are hidden in the world.

Gameplay

You play through a simi-open world wondering through each area, completing each goal and moving on to the next. The maps aren’t all that confusing, though I’ll admit I got this game when I was really young and forgot where the Thousand Year Door was after I collected the first Crystal Star. Hey don’t look at me like that.

Anyway, you fight enemies to level up, and you further you find power ups either by doing side quests or following the storyline.

There are also all sorts of badges in this game that give you characters buffs (abilities that either increase your characters’ defense, power, or doing something unique in general).

There’s a badge that turns Mario’s clothes into Luigi’s, which you need to complete a side quest, and a badge that turns them into Wario’s, and if you wear both badges at the same time, well I’m sure you hardcore Mario fans can figure that one out on your own. There are all sorts of amazing badges in this game that are either just something fun you can use or something neat that will help your character in different ways.

Also this game really takes the name Paper Mario to heart, allowing Mario to turn into paper airplanes, boats, and more. Battles are set up like a stage and have enemies and friends in the audience cheering you on, sometimes they will through items and rocks at you and sometimes they will jump up on stage and help you.

Source

Also using heavy attack that shake the stage will often cause the props in the background to fall over on top of you and the enemies, also some bosses will eat the audience in order to heal themselves. Everything about this game is just corny and funny to the very end. Now I’m not going to lie, you’ll have to do a decent amount of leveling up if you want to make it through this game.

I’ve spend an hour on bosses that should’ve only taken five minutes at most my first time. It’s also easy to level up too much where I’ve defeated enemies way too quickly, even the boss before the final boss.

Likes

One of the really neat things about this game is that while Mario is searching for the crystal stars Luigi is on his own adventure making frenemies along the way. With each crystal star you collect you’ll find Luigi at a different location with a new buddy at his side, if you talk to Luigi he will tell you his version of the adventure and his buddy will tell you what actually happened. Later on in the game you’ll have the option of purchasing a series of books known as Super Luigi that will tell the full story of what Luigi’s been up to while you’ve been on your journey.

I would really like it if Nintendo would turn Paper Luigi’s story into his own game, while Mario tells you his story in Rogueport.

Dislikes

There’s one part in the game that really grinds my gears (for lack of a better word). You have to talk to the Boss of a casino, who pretty much runs Rogueport to get a blimp ticket and later a train ticket. His office is located behind a door in the back of a shop at the far west of Rogueport, the only way to open it is to buy a dried shroom and dizzy dial (in game items) in that order at said store and tell the clerk your favorite color is yellow. Afterward she will unlock the door and you will gain access.

The only way you’d figure this out aside from looking it up online is to go to the far east of Rogueport in the back alley where a Snail where tell you for 500 coins, and in this game, it’s hard to collect 500 coins this early on in the game even if you saved all your money. That’s really the only bothersome ordeal in the game other than that, the game is a fun adventure.
