Game History

Source

The game was made in celebration of Digimon's 15th Anniversary not only were Digimon fan blessed with a game, but also a sequel to the original Digimon Adventure anime. Luckily you don't need to have seen the Digimon anime or play any other Digimon games before Cyber Sleuth. Cyber Sleuth is it's own original story.

This game originally wasn't going to be sold outside of Japan, but thanks to a petition the game was released digitally on the PS Vita and the PS4 recieved a physical copy.

Anyways the petition wasn't only for Cyber Sleuth to be released, but we are hoping to get more Digimon game localized soon.

Personal Experience

This is the first Digimon game I beat I have played Digimon World Dawn on the DS, but I never beat it.

Story

The game takes place in modern day Tokyo, but with one major difference. The next generation of Web service is know as EDEN.

Everyone has an avatar that allows them to physically enter EDEN. EDEN is used for a variety of things such as business meetings, shopping, and socializing. But of course with every new generation of web browsing there is another generation of hacker.

from Google
Source

The hackers have been using a program known as Digimon Capture. When hackers capture Digimon they can cause a large variety of issues within EDEN. The Digimon program seem to have no limits to what they can do making them the best hacking tool for any hacker.
One day when your character is in a chat room a moderator enters your chat room and asks the people in the chat room to meet in EDEN and you'd be able to see the Digimon Capture program in action.

The supposed moderator ended up being a hacker and threatened the people in the chat room to show up or else, but naturally no one except you and your friends agree to go to EDEN and learn about the Digimon Capture program.
When you get to the meeting place in EDEN a hacker hacks into your Digivice and force you to install the Digimon Capture program. After you get the Digimon capture program one of your friends runs off and you have to chase after him along the way you run into some Digimon who are actual living beings. You get attacked by a Digimon, but someone intervenes and saves you.
After you talk to the person who saves you, you have to choose which Digimon will be your starter. You have three choices Palmon, Terriermon, and Hagurumon. Each one of these is one of 3 major classifications of Digimon.

The three classifications are Data, Vaccine, Virus, and Neutral. There are many sub types such as Fire, water, and wind. There is a large variety of combinations, but every Digimon his either data, vaccine, virus, and neutral and then a sub type. I'll explain what these classifications and sub types do in the gameplay section.

Gameplay

Source

Digimon Story's gameplay is similar to pokemon in a many ways, but it has its own gameplay differences that make it stand out from Pokemon. You can have up to 9 Digimon in your party at once, but you can only have 3 digimon battling at once.

How many Digimon you can hold in your party depends on you 'memory' each Digimon takes up a certain amount of memory it takes up for example weaker digimon only take up one or two pieces of your memory while stronger Digimon take up to like 20 pieces of memory.

The battle mechanics are only a very small part of the gameplay. To capture more Digimon you need scan them by encountering them in the field and once it reaches 100% you can convert the data into a physical Digimon to add to your team.

You convert the data by going to an area known as the Digi-Lab which you can access from certain terminal's in the game world.

Digi-Lab

Here you convert data you got from scans into Digimon. You will also need to go here if you want to digivolve your party members. You can heal and buy goods for your Digi-farm. The digi-farm is a place where you can have your partner's level up stats and grow stronger.

As for the effectiveness of each type I'll only provide how effective Data, Virus, and Vaccine are on each one. Data beats Vaccine, Vaccine beats Virus, and Virus beats Data. I'd list the sub types, but there are too many to list. XD

Stats

HP: Health Points-how much damage your digimon can take
SP: Skill Points- Your Digimon has a lot of possible moves it can use, but some skills take up more SP than others.
ATK: Physical Attack
DEF: Defense
INT: Intelligence- this is you Special Attack power
SPD: Speed determines which Digimon goes first.
ABI: Ability points are used solely for Digivolution the only way to increase is by digivolving and de-digivolving your partner Digimon. Some items can be used to increase it, but these items are VERY rare.
CAM: Camaraderie also is mainly used for evolution, but it also affects combo rates in battle. Some Digivolutions require high CAM with other digimon since there is a type of digivolution known as DNA Digivolution which is basically fusion. To perform DNA digivolution two digimon need to have 100% CAM.

Digivolution

Digivolution is how you evolve your Digimon partners. Every digimon has a very large evolution tree. To digivolve your partners to a new form you have to reach certain requirements which can vary from levels to stats needing to be at a certain point. Every digimon has a max level that it can reach to increase this max level you need to de-digivolve your partners which can be very annoying, but it is necessary if you want to get all the Digimon in the game. The digi-farm exists to increase your state and can be filled with various farm goods made specifically to increase stats. There is a lot more that goes into, but I think I'll stop there. The game explains the farm mechanic much better than I can.

Graphics

The graphics for a portable console are amazing. The game runs smoothly on the Vita although there is a lot of loading screens, but I can excuse it since the areas it loads are pretty big for Vita standards.

Music

The music for the game is amazing! It is mainly electronic music, but it fits the game perfectly.
Voice Acting: The voice acting is in all Japanese, but the voice actors do a great job and match their character perfectly.

Overall Thoughts

Source

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is easily in my top ten games of all time. I highly recommend it to any JRPG fan. I also recommend it for anyone who loves the pokemon games, but wish they had better stories. The game is pretty challenging especially if you don't digivolve your Digimon whenever you can. The bosses are pretty challenging if you aren't prepared.
