Bubsy Review - The Woolies Strike Back

You read it well: Bubsy is back! The lynx with a white T-shirt that can not stop expressing the most foolish jokes, is ready to jump from platform to platform. For the younger gamers I will first explain who or what Bubsy is.

Bubsy is back!

Bubsy, what's the matter with him? It's one of the 90's mascots that has not saved: a cat in a white T-shirt, which has to be used mainly by (bad) word joints. Developer Accolade wanted to fight with figures like Sonic and Mario. They put a lot of money into the marketing campaigns, including Domino's Pizza commercials and an actual cartoon (of which only one episode is unfortunately).

In 1993, Bubsy was released in Claws Encounter of the Furred Kind for the SNES and the Sega Megadrive. Unfortunately, the first game was not as successful as they had hoped for both the press and the gamers. It also did not help the development team get a big hate for Bubsy, even to the point that Bubsyknuffels were suspended on the ceiling for execution. The second part, Bubsy 2, almost brought the company down. At the same time, Bubsy: Fractured in Furry Tales was released for the failed Atari Jaguar.

You would say that a company would give up a mascot if after three games it was still not a successful character. Unfortunately, there was another third game: Bubsy 3D: The Furbitten Planet for the Playstation 1. This I dare to mention the worst platform game ever, just like the rest of the critics and lion's share of the internet.

Bubsy was dead and buried until Black Forest Games released a new part this year under the name of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back. Can Bubsy be resurrected from the dead and taken in the arms of the gamers, or is this a smelly body that needs to be stopped again?

Habits and boring

You get exactly what you expect: a platform game with a talking cat. There is no element above the margin, so I can not call the game anything but 'ok'. Graphically, the game is ok; It's colorful, but nothing leaves a lasting impression. The art style is nice to watch, but the music makes the game feel so generous and ordinary.

The control is what you can expect; Bubsy runs adequately enough to get you through the levels. He can also float and make some kind of leap forward, as well as climbing on crab pavils (ok, I think that is charming and smart). You collect bulbs of wool throughout the level, as well as keys to collect larger stocks of wool bulbs. The enemies run or fly around in predictable patterns and the levels have all predictable themes; the desert, the forest, snow and so on. After a number of levels, there is a boss that easily defeats you after discovering his pattern and knowing his weaknesses.

The joys of Bubsy are cute at the start, and sometimes too clever ("Remember when I used to have falling damage?", A nice blow to criticism of the previous games), but after 10 minutes, you're ready. You can happily choose to kill Bubsy in the options, but you can put him on standby "Bubsy". Please do not, because it's just a machine gun of bad jokes. No heart should wear that, so be warned.

The ex-drug addicted friend

I see that Black Forest Games has done its utmost to give the game no weaknesses; There is little criticism to give up. Unfortunately, the criticism is that the game does not have its own identity and is simply flat and boring. If this had not been Bubsy, I'd never known it had existed. I think that €29.99 for this game is remarkable as this game is more in the €19.99 frame.

I see Bubsy now as an ex-drug addicted friend; You've seen how bad he did his best, just did not get it and then went to the bottom. After years of hearing nothing from him, he comes back clean. He's safe, he's living a normal life, but that's what it's all about. I am pleased that Bubsy has an adequate game on the market, but everything has been said.

Thanks for your precious time.
