It is nice to ride on the racetrack. Among other Forza Motorsport 7 and GranTurismo Sport passed. And now EA comes with the new Need for Speed. A game that stays well close to the roots of the franchise. How this game relates in the asphalt jungle you can read in this Need for Speed Payback review!

We are already racing in every possible way this year, but a real arcade racer was still missing. Developer Ghost Games brings us exactly that with Need for Speed Payback. No realistic races, but nice about the top racing pleasure without the worry that you drive your car in ruins or keep a perfect line to win.

All in one package

Payback sends you the way in one simple mode in which you can practice different racing classes. This includes classical street racing, off-road racing, drag racing and drifting. And of course, in a Need for Speed game, the eternal battle with Fortune City's police, the city you can walk in and around, can not be left out. In all of these races the control of your car is just a little different from the rest.

For example, a car is particularly well-stretched, but does not work well in a curve. That is the case for a racer who, in turn, does well on the road, but does not bake anything as soon as you get up the sand. You will need an off-road car again. The most all-round in Need for Speed are the drive cars that are made to slip around the world.

Yet, all of these cars can not do so much against Fortune City's relocated police force. When these guests are sitting behind you, you can sit in the tanks under the coupés: the runners. These cars are not getting lost. At least, less easy.

Huge open world

In terms of gameplay, Payback offers you a quite varied package in this way. And all this has been incorporated into a highly elaborate and wide open world full of winding roads. A world that offers you much more in the four alternate areas (desert, wooded area, city and ravines) than just mentioned official races (telling the pennant and unimpressive story of the game).

For example, you'll find all-round racing racers that can help you out, track checks and flashes, spring chances and drift parks. You can also find many filling stations, casino tickets and other collectibles . In this last area, Payback seems the most like The Crew, which also featured countless similar locations on the map.

There are also the Tune-up shops that make your bolts considerably improved by playing cards. This has also been transferred almost one by one from The Crew and offers little originality. But there's no need for Need for Speed at all.

Crackers at the skate

Need for Speed is about speed, chaos and of course tearing in well-inflated bins. And that will be yours. Also on the pimp my ride area. Well-known brands such as Porsche, Ford, Dodge, Volkswagen and Lamborghini are over.

You see immediately that most of the time has been spent in this part of the game. The available cars look great. And that contrasts with the rest of the game, which does not look great in graphics, but focuses on what's really important in the game: Thick bins that make the flash at high speed.

Even though you notice that some of the leading brands are missing. Ferrari, for example, where have these cars stayed? Need for Speed clearly lacks a discount and that is not the only one. Need for Speed also misses a turn when it comes to keying on your bin.

Building your car in the garage is an element that is well represented. A new bumper, spoilers, other rims, everything is replaceable if you have just released it by racing and completing challenges. Of course, you can also give your car a color as well as the complete cover of all parts. But it does not matter, apart from external appearance.

A vicious circle?

The only thing that matters here is that one car drives differently than the other. In addition, buying a car and pimping is a lot of money. And here, Need for Speed Payback full of gas drives a red passing red.

Because you earn money you do by racing. Something that is logical in a game like this. Only during the 15-hour campaign, you have to change your car regularly. In addition, you'll have to keep this up with the latest playing cards, if you want to continue racing.

If you do not do this, you simply will not get on. The AI in the game, which is still quite easy to overcome at the beginning, is becoming increasingly difficult. They go to your beech, suddenly take abbreviations and use their nitro much more efficiently. And you have no money for a new car nowadays.

Burn online rubber

And so you have to grind, grind and grind again. Or you can opt for microtransactions so you pay for shipments full of game money and goodies. It's a hidden vicious circle where the term pay to win is quite thick. Another way is to turn yourself into the multiplayer area in Payback.

Here you will battle online in two playlists: Ranked and Unranked. It's a simple system that fits exactly well and really had no complication. You choose your cars to race online, come in a lobby, vote for a race and rip off with the rest of the world. And thus you earn money and sometimes some parts.

It's a nice alternative to earning money and also makes for a fun piece of gameplay extending racing pleasure. Unfortunately, Need for Speed Payback's multiplayer does not cover all of the disciplines of the game, but online tearing is limited to classic racing and off-road racing.

Conclusion

With Need for Speed Payback, Ghost Games can bundle a good bundle of elements into one new game. But there are quite a few small and big misses in the game. Despite this, this is definitely a successful arcade racer that will certainly entertain you, even among all the other racers.

The game looks good, but not very good and knows mountains of varied content. And the game also plays a lot of different ways through the various disciplines you practice on and off the road. The franchise is on the right track, but still has to find the right gear.

Pros

➕ Thick soundtrack
➕ Great open world
➕ Spacious variation in races
➕ Enough to do off the beaten track

Cons

➖ Miss leading automotive brands
➖ Forced gate or pay

Thanks for your precious time.
