Just before the gamescom, Bigben Interactive announced a brand new game from Frogwares, the developer behind various Sherlock Holmes games. However, this new game, The Sinking City, is of a different order. The Sinking City is a new kind of game with known elements, HP Lovecraft influences and that in a world-sealed city. Sounds interesting, right?

The closed city

The Sinking City was announced a couple of weeks and is only scheduled for sometime next year. The game is still in an early stage and i have not seen a lot of things yet. Many aspects of The Sinking City are still in the prototype phase so how the final game and gameplay are shaped is waiting a while. However, it does not matter that we have learned a lot about what Frogwares wants to do exactly with the game.

In The SInking City you take the role of a private detective who is in Oakmond City. This city has been hermetically sealed after it has been flooded by a huge floodwave. In various areas, it has now been dried again, but there are still underwater areas. Why then quit? Well, that tide had something supernatural, and the government would rather take the uncertainty. You, on the other hand, following a simple assignment from a client, are going to be a real detective, but soon you also get caught up in the problems the city knows.

Three pillars

The Sinking City is based on the following three pillars: an open world, an open story and HP Lovecraft. An open world speaks reasonably for themselves, but in the case of Frogwares this is the first time they make a completely open world. Their previous games did not necessarily consist of small levels, but there was no question of an open world at all. This is different in this case and that is not without reason, because the city plays an important role in itself. The city is freely accessible either by foot or by boat, depending on where water is or not.

An open story is already a somewhat less used term and that is where the developer's knowledge really looks around the corner. The Sherlock Holmes games were all based on research, logical links, people speaking, interrogating and drawing conclusions. That aspect of research is also back in The Sinking City, but you get more freedom than ever before. To illustrate this, the developer sketched a clear example.

Pretty early in the game you get from a random woman asking if you want to find her missing man. Of course, you are investigating and you are no longer following a linear structure. Unlike many games today, finishing a list of goals, you are now entering the adventure. For example, you can go to the police station to get information. Depending on previous developments in your research, the agent may help you. It may also be that your previous actions are not appreciated, leaving you to leave the police station where you can try the agent in question to buy.

Another possibility is that you visit the post office to collect information. Does the post officer not work? Then you can try to slip in through the back door so that you can find more information in the items. Or you'll find the backpack of the one you're looking for during your search without having visited the post office or police station. There you will find a book with a library, which gives you an opportunity to ask in the library whether people know more. Three totally different directions so to find out more.

Your research can complete you at your own discretion; It's not the case that you look continuously at the folder to find your next assignment or clue. The developer does not want to keep you at hand, but you feel like being a real private detective, and only if you decide on the course of the case. Whether each case has the same conclusion and if you can still find all the possible clues in one playthrough, awaiting. The developer could simply not be concrete about this, because he is still busy with writing the story. However, it is a fact that each player will have a complete own experience, purely on the basis of his or her own research.

Occult strange events

The open world and the open story are two things that seem to be well connected, because that gives you the welcome freedom that may lead to fascinating adventures. However, we talked about three pillars and the latter is of course HP Lovecraft. For years, Frogwares wants to do something with this author; at least, with the universe he has created in his books. The Sinking City is an all-in-one adventure, inspired by the world of HP Lovecraft.

What this author used to be good was to make you feel insignificant. In the illusion he creates, you're not at the top of the food chain, but you're just an ant in perspective. To indicate that illusion, there are huge monsters, gods and other mysterious creatures that are many times more impressive than humans. That feeling wants to try Frogwares to transfer with The Sinking City and that's something you'll be faced with soon. You will see and experience these strange tentacles, unusual creatures and mysterious powers.

Even the NPCs in the city are under the influence of a dark force that drives them slowly but surely to despair. The NPCs hear voices in their heads, see visions and do the strangest things. For example, you may encounter someone in the street who is praying. You can also meet someone who is on top of a building, and to be able to make full surrender without worry. As a player, you will soon discover that many things are not fluffy, but it moves like an elusive occult happening throughout the city. You'll also find strange artifacts everywhere and exciting sights that have not been there before.

All of this affects people and their behavior. Indeed, they will lose the sense of reality and you also have an effect on you. You are absolutely no superhero, but only a private detective who will struggle with the dark forces that are busy in the background. Your judgment can be influenced by this, because what is reality and what is not. The voices you hear are you really, or do you love that gray mass? The deeper you dip in the dark, the worse it will be with your mental condition. All this under the guise of that insanity lives in a world inspired by HP Lovecraft.

Not only do you struggle with yourself, you will also have to deal with the physically present samples. Think of creatures from the deepest of the sea, as well as scary tentacle samples and other spikes that you prefer not to dream about. However, the game is totally out of combat because the core gameplay is investigating in a way you know about the Sherlock Holmes games. It does not matter, however, that you will be confronted with the monsters, dangers and occult atmosphere that may be affected, and this can lead to certain combat scenes. However, how that will be filled is unknown.

Preliminary conclusion

The game will greatly remind you of the Sherlock Holmes games of the same developer. They were often fun and fun in gameplay, which is now expanding to a great adventure in which you experience your own story. The HP Lovecraft influences on the world, as well as the story and mental state of the main characters seem to make the twist just what makes it even more interesting. But i have seen very little of the game, on some pre-alpha content, but that is rarely representative. Nevertheless, my interest has arisen.
