Sonic Forces will be the second part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. In addition to the old-fashioned 2D adventure of the previously released Sonic Mania, Sonic Forces makes a new attempt to provide you with a modern adventure with the blue hedgehog.

Generations 2.0

In Sonic Forces, it's possible to play with the classic Sonic of the Megadrive era, as well as the modern Sonic of the later parts. A design reminiscent of how the 20-year anniversary was celebrated with the game Sonic Generations. What's new in this part is that you can make your own character and you can choose from different animal species, including a rabbit, a wolf and of course a hedgehog. For gameplay session, there was already a rabbit ready and what the character is, this will come standard with a grappling hook. But that's not all, because each character also has his own skills, depending on the species you choose as a base. So our rabbit had the advantage of being touched after what would be longer invulnerable.

To be this good takes AGES

First in the demo i played a 3D level with the modern Sonic. Still, it's the intention to run through a level as fast as possible using your boost function and meanwhile you must either disable or dodge obstacles. Unfortunately, it was noticed that SEGA is still searching to perfect playing with Sonic in a 3D level. Even now, the super speed where Sonic is known is difficult to achieve by all enemies and obstacles. Furthermore, the control did not work too well, and that does not happen. It's a pity that SEGA strikes in the existing pitfalls just before the 25th anniversary, adding little news to make Sonic Forces better than its predecessors.

Now, SEGA has the time before the game ends, but on the hands-on session, it is doubtful whether they will find the right balance. The 2D inspired levels, on the other hand, are very strong and are also very good. It is noteworthy that SEGA has experience with the platforming in this kind of games because it was extremely smooth and smooth. In the demo i played a boss battle based on a battle from an earlier Sonic game and the nostalgia sparked it from. Classical Sonic plays exactly the way you know it, though, as in Sonic Mania, he has a new move: the drop dash. Already running and jumping i defeated Dr. Eggman and it felt delicious as before.

Levels for your avatar

Sonic Forces also features a new mode called Hero Stages. These levels run around your avatar that drives a level. We could choose from a variety of weapons with two different options. And in my case i had a flame shutter that also offered the opportunity to jump extra high. The funny thing about the level in question was that the weapon only worked with certain colored Wisps. The other Wisps found in the level did nothing for my flame maker. These are undoubtedly intended for other weapons, which means that these levels involve some replay value. It creates the opportunity to discover new routes in a level.

Sonic Tag-Team... run?

Also, the gamescom demo included an exclusive part that was first shown and playable, called Tag-Team mode. In this case, Sonic and our character ran together through a 3D level. Alternately, you manage the characters, but unfortunately you can not determine when that happens, because the switch will go automatically. Because Sonic works with a different character, the special possibilities are exchanged per person.

For example, Sonic can use a grappling hook and your character has the Sonic boost. It does not matter, however, from the design of Sonic Heroes. Thanks to a combination of two different characters, the Tag-Team level played a little finer than the levels in which Sonic only rented around. Simply because the balance in this level felt a lot better what the gameplay benefited.

Preliminary conclusion

At gamescom we really can try out every aspect of Sonic Forces, which one i liked better than the other. The 3D levels with Sonic the Hedgehog games just not good enough to emphasize the speed of Sonic. SEGA may make the 3D section too complex by means of (too) many obstacles and enemies. The 2D levels, on the other hand, play well and make a lot of fun. The ability to create your own character is a nice idea and the levels created specifically for your character seem to sit well together. The new Tag-Team principle also plays well by changing characters and the balance in it. Sonic Forces will appear late this year and maybe here and there SEGA implements some improvements so that Sonic Forces is a winner.

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
