Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen Review - Mustard after the meal

Capcom makes a sport of raising the endurance of Dragon's Dogma into infinity. Five and a half years after the original appeared on the previous generation of game computers, the original Japanese rpg is now also played on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Too little too late? You can say a lot of Capcom , but not that she did not do her best to bring Dragon's Dogma to her husband. The game has been released several times over the last five years, under different titles and on various platforms. Now the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 turn, but the question is who's still waiting for this rather outdated rpg...

Dark Arisen , the Game of the Year edition featuring all the latest updates and extensions, also appeared on the previous generation of consoles and on the PC. What kind of news has this rpg, after the Skryims, Mass Effects and Dark Souls of this world, yet to offer? Nothing at all, as is apparent from our return to the world of Gransys.

Ruthless tooth of time

The game is exactly the same as the PC version released last year, only the interface and controls are now optimized for the consoles. It is therefore not surprising that the whole package is offered at a very low price (advisory price 25 euros), so newcomers (which will not be much) get a lot of content for little money.

Somewhere, it's a pity that there's no reason for the first hour fans to re-enter the battle against the monsters. Visually and technically, Dragon's Dogma has been silent for years. Also on the new consoles it appears that the rpg has to dive the underpin against the ruthless tooth of time.

No improved technology...

Surroundings eyes bald and empty through the aged textures, characters are missing through dated (facial) animations every form of personality and as a blow on the rocket, the world of Dragon's Dogma is thwarted by pop-in, causing cities, flora and fauna and even enemies to be loaded too late. Whether a game costs 20 or 70 euros: in 2017, this kind of technical problem can not really be over.

Although Dragon's Dogma does not demand too much of the new consoles, the game still runs crazy enough at thirty frames per second. At the outset, Dark Souls and Mass Effect did not perform much better on this part, but for a five year old game, Capcom had been celebrated if she had upgraded the technique here and there. Unfortunately, it should not be so, but fortunately, the rpg is still perfectly playable.

Three-threaded snakes

Outdated or not: Dragon's Dogma is and remains a nice rpg. The combat system is the great excellence: elements from Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and Shadow of the Colossus prove to be a golden combination. Deadly combo rides you with the greatest ease and with a push of the button you climb the body of giant monsters like cyclops, chimeras and fire-sprawling dragons.

Do you fight for a giant three-head snake? Then you have to climb through his tail to chop one of his three heads off. At this kind of moment, Dragon's Dogma is at its best: enemies do not feel like simple shooting, but as intelligent, smart creatures that need to approach you tactically. You're lucky not only, but together with your teammates: pawns called.

Deliver me the dear!

In the versatile and fairytale-like world of Gransys, it wonders of these computer-driven characters. On the way you will find several soldiers, magicians and archers who can travel with you after a short conversation. Each pony is unique in a sense: they have their own name, voice, appearance and of course their own skills and specialties. On the way they also give you tips where rare treasures are hidden, or indicate the one person you need for a quest.

As mentioned, Dark Arisen, like the previous PC version, contains all downloadable content from the original game. That means that Bitterblack Isle , the most comprehensive extension that introduces a whole new island, is included in the game. We're very pleased with that, because BitterBlack Isle plays and feels like the love baby that will never get Skyrim and Dark Souls.

Are you leaving the island alive?

The island is grim and dark, the life design refreshing and the enemies and (end) bosses are more challenging and tougher than ever before. A well-assembled team and strong equipment are absolutely required to get alive from this island. BitterBlack Isle is and remains the greatest addition to Dark Arisen and also the most notable, but we must also be honest: this expansion was also played four years ago on the previous generation and experience has remained the same since.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions, of course, include all the updates and improvements that Capcom has brought to Dragon's Dogma over the years. For example, it is possible to travel quickly and easily between certain areas through crystals that you can place around the world. You can also jump to the capital Gron Soren with a rare object quickly. A relief, since you had to take all the environments on foot in the original Dragon's Soul, so you only walk for half an hour.

The conclusion is clear: Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen comes out too late for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The five-year-old original is almost fined and even performs worse than last year's PC version, crazy enough for sixty frames per se rotates.

It's time for the creators to finally go to Dragon's Dogma 2...
