Brawlout Review - Achievement system is motivating

The new game from Angry Mob Games looks suspiciously like Super Smash Bros, right? In any case, a comparison is easily made. It is positive to see that other developers are also competing in this genre, read on soon if Brawlout can distinguish itself.

What does Brawlout have to offer offline?

The initial screen is clear and offers us the choice of four different options. In quick play you start a match quickly and easily. The choice options in terms of characters and game settings are similar to Super Smash Bros. You can play against each other in time or in stock. With friends, this stand offers a lot of fun, unfortunately items are a loss to complete the chaos.

In the single player section we mainly find ways to train and offer little challenge outside the arcade stand. It is nice that there is a tutorial available and a part where you can practice, but as soon as the controls are clear you will probably not often come back here. In arcade you take on different characters from the game. The character you fight with also determines the short storyline. In the end, this type of fighting game does not really revolve around the profound storylines, but in this area it could have distinguished itself from Super Smash Bros.

What does Brawlout have to offer online?

Online gaming is a welcome addition to Brawlout, this is also possible in several ways. It is possible via local multiplayer to play with Switch friends and in online you can take on people from all over the world. The latter generally works fine, because the search for a match happens in the background. This allows you to go through most menus, without affecting the match. It is even possible to start a game in quick play with long-term waiting time. You will see a notification when you can play online. A plus for Brawlout! Unfortunately, the online system is struggling with varying results. The speed and lag depends on the internet connection of both players (just like the last Super Smash Bros games where online play was possible).

Finally, we can exchange our earned currencies and other rewards in the store for anything and everything. Nice to see that Brawlout here gives a nod to the controversial shoot box practices. In this shop everything is only for sale with ingame rewards, not with real money.

The elaboration requires some attention

For 20 euros we get a lot of the different modes that we can also find in Super Smash Bros, but does Brawlout also play just as well? Not entirely, unfortunately. In all possible positions, both online and offline and both in quick play and in the single player stands I came across. It does not happen often, but it is annoying for a fast fighting game when it happens. It even cost me the victory. Especially in offline settings, I hope the developer can roll out an update to fix this problem.

The camera and controls also do not always work well. In some cases, the camera angle is switched too slowly, so that the action is not displayed. The controls are getting used to, because some actions are different than in the Super Smash Bros series. After a number of fights I had mastered this and I was positively surprised. Angry Mob Games has implemented a number of changes that I find positive for the genre. In this way characters are very well balanced and they all have their own specialties. These special attacks offer a lot of variation during fights, so you do not always stick to one character. It is only a pity that the steering is not always accurate. It happened to me quite regularly that my character did something different than I wanted.

Conclusion

Brawlout is a bold move by developer Angry Mob Games. I am positively surprised by the game. For 20 euros there is plenty to do, both online and offline. Achieving daily achievements and rewards ensures that I am regularly 'Brawling'. There are a number of irritations that hopefully can be remedied through updates. Gameplay should work perfectly with a game like this. Although Brawlout is an end, there are still some areas for improvement that can be worked on.

The plus and minus points

✔ Worth the money
✔ Enough variety and challenge
✔ Similar to Super Smash Bros
✔ Achievement system is motivating
✖ Game occasionally is offline
✖ Control and camera do not always work
✖ Amount of characters may be expanded
✖ Can not be distinguished from Super Smash Bros

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
