The Escapists 2 Switch Review - Escape on vacation!

You lie on the beach, enjoying the blue sea and sky. Suddenly you hear sirens, helicopters, and are they dogs? Suddenly the whole beach is filled with agents, and before you know it you are already back on the way back to prison. But hey, what does it matter, you're going to escape again!

Because that's what it's all about in The Escapists 2 ; escape from that dirty prison! How you can do all this you can read in this The Escapists 2 Switch review! It is entirely up to you how this is going to happen. You can lure an agent into a dark corner, slap him around his ears and steal his outfit.

If you do this unnoticed, you can just about walk out the door. You can also choose to sneak through the halls through the air vents, somewhere to demolish a wall and then cut through the outer fence. These are just two of the infinite ways to escape from the walls of the prison.

Variation

This is one of the strongest and one of the weakest points of this title. The game offers more than enough variety in the ways of escaping from prison. You can crafty many items and use them how you want.

You can make weapons to disable fellow prisoners or agents. You can make all kinds of tools to demolish walls, dig holes or open doors. You can play the game completely the way you want.

Nevertheless, the game is very repetitive in certain areas. There is a certain routine in every prison, and you have to adhere to that. If, for example, you are not present at dinner, this is noticed and the security in the building is lifted up a bit. This can be seen as a nice twist in the gameplay, but you can also take it as very boring. You usually do the same thing, and only in the designated free time do you do things that you want to do yourself.

Customization

This is perhaps the best thing about this game. You can adjust every prisoner (including your own) and agent to how you want them. You have the choice of dozens of hair styles, outfits, faces, etc. You also have the option to change the names. Tip from us; give the prisoners the names of the complete Game of Thrones cast, funny as Tyrion Lannister with Khal Drogo on the fist goes and wins.

Just without jokes, the customization options give this game a really personal touch. It's cool to give all characters nice names and to change their looks. It gives the game of escape a very nice twist and certainly adds something to the replay value.

Multiplayer

Actually this is the way to play this game. If you've played a few games co-op, you do not want to go back to the single player any more. The strategic aspect comes back much stronger if you play it together with up to 3 others, and that is a lot of fun. The fact that you can take all sneaky actions together with your buddies and eventually plan a spectacular outbreak is fantastic.

There is also a versus mode. Here you play against 3 other players on your own, and it is a race who knows how to escape first. This ensures an intense time pressure which ensures a good dose of tension. You will try to find out what the other players are planning and will also try to thwart them.

Boring

Yet this one word does not go away: boring. There is a lot of downtime between all the sneaky cases and spectacular outbreaks. You get up, walk to the obligatory roll call, go to breakfast, etc. Only in your spare time you can do your thing at your leisure and that is just a shame. Fortunately, the routines per prison are different, but that does not change that much.

During breakfast you can just walk freely through the cafeteria and talk to your fellow prisoners, but that will also end after a second or ten. Then you do not have to do anything for half a minute. You could say that this gives you the time to think about your big escape, but it remains a bit boring.

Conclusion

In general, The Escapists 2 is certainly not a bad game. The Switch is a perfect way to play this title, it looks great and plays great. The customization options are very nice and add a lot of value to the game. The price of 20 Euro is certainly not wrong, but more expensive it certainly should not have been. The game simply has a lot of downtime and is very boring at certain points. The idea behind the game is fun and in co-op the game is the best.
