Fruits and Veggies Monday | Chocolate Matcha Protein Bites

Happy Monday my foodie friends!



We just got back from a brief visit to the Keys last week and while we were on the trip I realized we were running a bit low on healthy treats! I know, it’s shocking and hard to believe, but it’s true! So, after making a fresh batch of Grain free Granola this morning I was ready. We really love this protein packed breakfast treat. Feel free to check out my recipe! Goji Berries, raisins and every nut and seed I had on hand!

But first things first! It’s not just Monday, it’s Fruits and Veggies Monday! This is the day founder @lenasveganliving and hostess @plantstoplanks have established as a day to celebrate Fruits and Vegetables! What a great way to start your week, sharing healthy recipes and ideas from all over the globe! Thank you both!


Protein bites...


were definitely on my mind this morning, you know something to pop in your mouth when you need a little extra energy? I spied the Matcha powder and dark chocolate chips in the pantry, perfect ingredients for what I had planned. Oh, remember that protein powder I made last week? We’ll be sure to include that as well!

What is Matcha?


Matcha is a type of green tea! Farmers cover the tea plants to avoid sunlight before harvest. Covering the plants increases the chlorophyll and amino acid content resulting in a beautiful rich green color. The entire leaf is dried and processed into a fine powder, resulting in higher caffeine levels and nutrients than regular green tea.

Health Benefits?


Yes, many! Matcha powder is rich in Catechins which are natural antioxidants. Antioxidants help reduce cell damage as. Studies have found drinking or eating Matcha can help protect both your liver and your heart. As we age, memory and brain function begins to fade, but studies have shown drinking Matcha can help improve memory, reaction time and brain performance!

Cup of tea?


Matcha powder can be served as your morning cup of tea! This tea will give you that energy boos you love without the anxiety and jitters some we often experience with caffeine. I love to include Matcha in my smoothies and as I’m making today… Protein Bites!

Matcha Energy!

  • Organic Unsweetened shredded Coconut (1 cup)
  • Matcha Powder (1 tbsp.)
  • Coconut Oil (1 tbsp.)
  • Maple or Yacon Syrup (3-4 tbsp.)
  • Dairy Free Dark Chocolate Chips (1/4 cup)
  • Birds Cacao Protein Powder (2 tbsp.)
  • Almond Flour (2 tbsp.)
  • Optional: shredded Coconut for rolling!

Process everything…


(except the chocolate chips) by mixing with a wooden spoon in your favorite bowl or using your favorite food processor!

I used the mini chocolate chips today, perfect for each bite! Coconut ready to roll! Coconut is so good for you but if you aren't a big fan of coconut, don't roll them! The coconut flavor in the protein balls is minimal with the delicious cacao and chocolate chips!

Roll each bite…


and then refrigerate or freeze until you’re ready for them!

Needless to say, these are in the freezer ready for our next road trip. I hope you’ll try them! Don’t have Matcha Powder? That’s okay! The Cacao Protein powder and chocolate chips will still give you that energy boost you’re looking for. These are great when you’re heading to the gym, with school lunches or even an afternoon snack. Matcha and chocolate--that sounds like a combination I can get behind! You and Lena have me definitely wanting to make some more bliss balls this week! I was lazy last week and just turned my combination into bars instead of balls, but they just look so darn cute when you roll them into something yummy like that coconut. :)

Everytime i see variations of 'bites' here, I have to tell people we call them 'bliss balls' in Australia. I just.love the name.

I missed your post on home made protein powder... must go back and read as I have been wanting to make my own in ages, especially with smoothie season about to start!!

Oh I love the name bliss balls much better! They truly are bliss :) I hope you like the protein powder, it's really quite simple.
