Hilda was beginning to tire and needed to take a break. She had been out all morning and still had three little ones at home to feed. The flower garden was lovely this time a day and she often traveled here for her afternoon bath. The shade of the apple tree gave the bird bath a nice cool covering and made this time of day ideal for Hilda.

She waited for the other birds to take their baths before she flew over to perch on the edge. The water was warm to the touch, but still cool when she splashed about. She sang a sweet song as she bathed without any care. She didn’t see the furry predator behind her.

Barnie saw the cat. She was crouched down and ready to attack Hilda. He thought he should not interfere, but he liked her, and he came here to watch her everyday as she played in the bath. What kind of life would he have if that cat had her way with this beautiful little sparrow?

He couldn’t think of any life without Hilda. He screeched as loud as he could, and the cat stopped and looked above her. Barnie flew down, got the cat’s attention and then flew the opposite direction. Barnie flew as far as he could, keeping time so that the cat continued to chase him. Alas, his precious Hilda was safe.
