This is a combination of "Have You Smiled Today? #38" and a Freewrite Poem using the prompt: coffee.
This cicada is smiling!
Dog Days of Summer Cicada
I have been on my own since the day I was born,
Not even the size of a kernel of corn.
The size of rice, to be precise.
From a tree limb I had to fall to the ground,
And would have screamed, if I was able to make sound.
Sipping on grass roots as I burrowed under the ground,
Until my new home was finally found.
I matured in my home of three years,
Drinking sap from tree and plant roots, without any fears.
Then, the Dog Days of Summer were here,
And humans were drinking iced coffee in high gear.
My shell was too tight and I was ready to burst,
So I clawed my way to the surface with my mouth pursed.
Arriving in the dark of night,
I searched for anything to hold on to, tight.
I found a garden which made me smile,
There I needed to stay for a while.
I was cleansed by a rain shower,
Then opened like a beautiful flower.
I climbed out of my shell,
And sprout wings, of all things.
My childhood stayed behind,
As now I had an adult mind.
I flew back to the tree,
Where I became me.
I made my buzz saw sound,
Until my mate was found.
The cycle was complete,
And now a new life will repeat.
The Dog Days Cicada and the Dog Days of Summer,
You can't have one, without the other.
The cicada just came up from the ground and climbed to the small cement wall next to my garden.
Before its last molt, we had a brief rain shower. The cicada then climbed out of its shell and spread its wings to dry.
The wings are now dry and are held to its side.
Here you can see the shell better and get a closer look at the cicada's abdomen.
The cicada is now an adult. It flew to the tree, leaving its shell behind. Once an adult, it will only live for 2 weeks to mate and then it will die.

Thanks partner! You have lived a sheltered life. : ) There are over 3,000 varities around the world except for Antarctica. If you can't see them, you will definitely here them if they come to your neighborhood.
Did you.... Did you... deliberately make it into the shape of a goblet?
That's some next level writing (poeting?) skills - content+aesthetics. Great job! :D
I'm not much of a poet-loving person myself, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. The first line already was catching, and it kept me immersed 'til the end.
HaHa! No I...No I...did not deliberately make it into the shape of a goblet. : )
Wow! Thanks so much for your compliment. It means a lot coming from you! And thanks for the resteem. : )
Because I am to intellectual, sexy, steamy, radiant, and so very sexy for keeping a burning thing in my lap, it is yours to do with as you please. HAHA!
Amazing pictures.
Thanks so much! I am loving my new camera but still adjusting.
I enjoyed learning about the life of a cicada from birth to day of death in the form of a poem.
Thanks so much! I am glad to hear that you enjoyed it. : )
Really interesting. Having lived a very sheltered life I'd never heard of a cicada. I don't think we have them here in Ireland.

I enjoyed this very much.

Aw, thanks so much @djynn! When I saw that cicada smiling on the photo, I knew in a heartbeat that it had to go with this post. : )

I loved your #freewrite so much, I have to toss you the Over 20 Club #HotPotato
"Hey" @whatisnew!
#HotPotato!
@freewritehouse started throwing a hot potato! Don't get caught with it or you'll have to clean up after the party (without any helpers!).
This week it started with @happycrazycon being thrown a hot potato by @iamjadeline here: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@happycrazycon/freewrite-prompt-mango-love-6438b432a0664 and
then she rudely threw it to @byn to avoid the inevitable crash once she started down the mountain hillside: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@byn/her-mango-lipstick
Then @byn threw it to @wonderwop, because she is maddingly, obsessively in love with him :
https://steemit.com/freewrite/@wonderwop/growing-up-coffee
The @wonderwop threw it to me after he'd figured out how to stop one piece from burning, eating that piece:

Go read another freewrite and pass it on to that writer in the comments! Also, yes, I really read your freewrite. Here's the link to the contest announcement: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@freewritehouse/hot-potato-an-over-20-club-game
