🎶 Show me the way to go home.
I’m tired and want to go to bed.
I had a little drink about a hour ago
and it went right to my head.
No matter where I roam,
over land or sea or foam,
You will always here me singing this song,
🎶Show me the way to go home. 🎶

An old song my mother used to sing it once in awhile. I think she sang it when she was lonesome. She was far away from her birthplace in Ireland. She never spoke of it but I’m sure she was longing to see her mother and siblings.

Show me the way home was on her mind but she had a husband and children right there in her home in Canada.

The past is always there looming in the back of our mind and sometimes we never get over our childhood.

Are you at home in the present or does show me the way home take you back to your childhood home?

Missing someone saddens the heart especially for those that we lost. I think I'm one of the lucky ones who have been born and raised here and most probably die here. It makes me wonder about those who were displaced and cannot go back to the place they call home. We can make a new home some place else but there's nothing like where we grew up.

In my childhood all my father’s family lived within a few miles radius of each other. Times sure have changed and my brother is the only one of the family still living permanently in the area.

@redheadpei I feel for your Mother being so far from her family and homeland.

As I get older it makes me realize the sacrifices of my parents, especially my mother for coming into a different country, trying to fit in with my father’s relatives and never seeing her mother again.

@redheadpei that had to be hard on her heart.

Yes, she had a heart condition as a child from rheumatic fever and had two heart operations between having children. First it was a repair and then replacement of the mitral heart valve. It must have been hard as it was like living in the frontier when she came to Canada. The women worked hard and Mother tried to keep up but wasn’t used to it. Her mother had made sure she got her rest because of her heart condition. Mother never complained or told anyone. I knew because I remember her throwing up blood at times..not just a little and swollen ankle.

@redheadpei your Mother was a strong-willed woman. I admire her strength.

Our past is part of our present and I felt like reminiscing on my home as a kid growing up with my parents and brothers & sisters. Such a nice free write @redheadpei.

Thanks Angie @angiemitchell. Little videos go around in my head of certain times back then. Often I wish I had been kinder in certain situations but that comes later with more knowledge of life.

Very nice free write @redheadpei. Take me home is the place we live now for me but my childhood home is only three quarters away by car so we visit it quite often. So I can combine past and future easy in my life. Have you ever been to Ireland finding your roots?

I’ve always lived a long way from my childhood home but visit there quite often as my sister has a cottage in the area.
I was to Ireland two times. Once with my mother and after she passed I went once for a wedding of a cousin there.
It was nice to have gone back to my mother’s homeland when she was living. I meet her siblings who have all passed now.

Nice that you visite the old country once with your mother. Nice memories are made like that.
And what a luck your sister has a cottage for the visits (some about luck and being Irish?). I feel real lucky that my family all lives within an hour and a half drive, except a aunt golf my girlfriend who lives in Sweden.

- Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Show me the Way to go Home 1978

Great freewrite!

Are you at home in the present or does show me the way home take you back to your childhood home?
I like the present. I love the future even if it doesn't technically exist. The past has its good memories, but "Let's go living in the past" is not my mantra, or my song. Thanks for this one, @redheadpei!

- Jethro Tull - Living In The Past 1969

I mean, I love the song - but "living in the past" isn't a "my song" kind of theme. (Just to be clear, here.)
When I was 16, my mom was a big fan of Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull, and she kinda-sorta made fun of me for bringing Brahms albums home from the library in the town where we went grocery shopping once a week. Why was I drawn to classical music which was NEVER played in our home? It spoke to me....

Welcome and thanks Carol @carolkean for the songs and lovely comments. 💕

What a beautiful story. I can imagine her silent longing for her place of birth.

Thanks @wandrnrose. My mother never complained ~ just held it all in with that stiff upper lip.
