Grapevine - Freewrite
I heard it through the grapevine - that darn song and the dancing raisins won't leave my brain. Sing along!! Loud!! Sing on the top of your lungs!!! All together now: " We heard it through the grapevine....."
Of course, when I first came here, I didn't know what that meant. Like with so many things you learn in school - or could have learned if you had paid attention - often it is not so applicable in real life.
the English learned in School is rather formal - and in my case, British English which is a whole other language in many ways.
Just read some of the freewrites or when people are talking in discord.
the other day, in one of the discord channels, people were making fun of each other and talked about singing and taking selfies - I think. One of the lovely Englishmen was saying that he was painting the roof as he was talking on Discord and presumably taking selfies.
Of course, the American crowd gasped. We all visualized him on top of a 3 story building with paint brush and bucket in hand painting the roof with one hand and taking pictures with the other. Of course, for a second there, we were wondering why you would want to paint a roof in the first place. but you know - different countries, different customs.
Then, he posted a picture and he was painting a ceiling!!! A totally different story... Another example of using the same word and thinking of completely different things - happens all the time...

Ceiling, roof, what's the difference? :)
Thanks for this, Marianne!
Years ago our east-coast nephew said "I'm down with that," which I took to mean he was voting AGAINST pizza. "Down with pizza" would have meant "no pizza" back in my day. Where did "I'm down" originate to mean "I'm up for that?"
If one must get stuck with an earworm, "Heard it through the Grapevine" is good. Commercial jingles ((Menards, O'Reilly's, Visiting Angels, gaaahhh!!!) should be prohibited or restricted--or used as torture devices. In fact Barney the Dinsoaur's theme song was used to torture POWs.
Ha - your poor nephew must have been sad when he didn't get any pizza lol
and that is terrible torture!!! Barney the Dinosaur!! How could they!!!
Oh, he got his pizza - after explaining what "down with that" meant. :) But, hey, miscommunication can have horrific consequences!
That is for sure!!! And living in a time where we move around in the world, we really need to learn not to assume...
Well... the same thing happens with my native language, Italian.
When I was a kid, there were ways to say "awesome" that literally should mean the opposite, like "bestiale" (beastly) or "pesante" (heavy). Nowadays, nobody talks like that anymore, except some never-grew-up fifty-something :P
I should stick to 5 minutes but I got caught up with time.
I hope you still find time to read it.

My favorite version of the song is the Creedence Clearwater Revival cover my dad had on LP. I discovered the original by Marvin Gaye many years later.
Living in Italy, we have never seen a commercial with this song and don't associate it to dancing raisins... I associate it with my dad and his youth
Much better for sure!!!
