Welcome to the Freewrite House Interview Series

brought to you by @brisby!

Our Freewrite House loves to showcase all of you fantastic freewriters! So, each week, we'll be giving a different author the chance to answer a few questions, share some of the favorite stories they've written, and ask a question of their own to the community.

This week we've tortured tantalized the marvelous @Marcoriccardi with a long list of questions! Marco's stories and poetry are lush with detail and soul! He's been a great help to our freewriting group by delivering daily prompts and offering encouragement to his fellow Steemians. Also, he was kind enough to provide us with an Italian translation of the interview!

1 - What do you think would happen if everyone in the world suddenly forgot how to speak/communicate?

Well, there are many ways to communicate, not only the spoken words. Maybe everyone will pay more attention to the other’s behavior, watch more carefully what they do. We would be more cautious, and prudent, since we couldn’t rely on friendly words, but in the same time I think it would be easier to understand each other based on our actions.

2 - What is something that you’ve had to unlearn? Why?

I had to unlearn some bad way of thinking, especially being afraid of everything, self-loathing and moping around. Bad self-esteem was leading me to a spiral of inaction and even to depression. I had to unlearn the toxic thinking routine, in order to learn to live.

3 - Has a freewrite prompt ever opened up a door to something that you either hadn’t thought of in a while or had chosen to not confront or deal with? Did you decide to write about it? If so, do you feel that it helped with the issue or gave you a release in being able to put the issue and your feelings into words?

There are three prompts so far that pushed me to talk about things that otherwise I would have kept hidden:

  • the first one was “apricot” (day 14), a prompt that led me to talk about my childhood and to show a very naïf painting of an apricot tree I really loved as a child, but playing with whom almost made me losing an eye at the age of 10 (and MyEye is my Steemit and general-chat/forum/blog profile image, there’s maybe some Freud stuff here);
  • the second was “dog hair” (day 75), that led me to talk for the first time ever about the death of my beloved dog Lilly.
  • the third was “cigarettes” (day 105), a freewrite I’m still a little ashamed of, because it shows my fears and my worries about my economic hardship and my relationship (with the mighty Princess Sassy).
In each of the three cases, I didn’t intend to write about those things. “Thoughts arrived like butterflies” (sorry, Eddie Vedder), following prompts that were somewhat “innocuous”... freewriting acted for me as an autotherapy session, that is great of course, but a bit scary too.

4 - What is something that your brain tries to make you do and you have to will yourself not to do it?

Sleeping?! Ah! Ah! I don’t really get this one: is “brain” something different from “me”? How can my brain go against my will, that is my brain too?

5 - What is a word or phrase in Italian that you’d like those who speak English to learn? What does it mean to you?

It’s a simple, and well known word. It’s the Italian greeting par excellence: “ciao!”
Everybody knows it, but even not many Italians know it’s true meaning: “ciao” means “I’m at your service”. For this, it’s a greeting used only for friends or people you have a great confidence with. It’s not formal as “buongiorno/buonasera” (good morning/good evening). When you say “ciao”, you kindly make yourself available to someone.

6 - What is something that you’ve done (or not done) that you regret?

I regret having lost so much time, and still losing, in laziness and fear of acting.

7 - Do you believe that everything can be considered art? Why?

Uh-oh, I have just discovered that I can’t define what art is… I’m sure not everything can be considered art, but nearly everything can be turned in a piece of art if someone did it for expressing a thought. I say nearly because every form of violence is where I put the line. Violence can’t be art, but I like strong themes and strong language...so, ultimately I don’t know.

8 - What do you feel is the biggest waste of one’s time? Is it something that you’ve had to overcome doing

Fear. Fear is the biggest waste of time: not doing something for fear of failure or making a bad impression. I still deal with that, I’m still not brave enough...

9 - What are some things in life that you feel people have to learn the hard way?

I had to learn the hard way that nothing is easy and you can’t avoid pain and suffering forever. I think everyone has to learn it on her/his skin, nobody can teach it by proxy

10 - What is a question that you wish people would ask you?

On which account you want to be credited this million euro?
Ah! Ah! I’m joking… I don’t know, I’m open to every question, the mere act of being asked tickles my ego.

11 - What do you do when it seems like everything is going wrong?

I isolate myself from everything and everyone and take a long sleep. After at least 8 or 9 hours of sleep, the things look better and I’m able to think about a solution.

12 - What is something that you’ve discovered about yourself since you’ve begun freewriting?

I discovered that my written English is understandable by native English speakers and that I often write better things when I’m not fully in control of the process.

13 - What is something that seems small to others but is important to you?

A caress and a smile, a walk hand in hand, a sleep side by side.

14 - Have you ever lost joy in doing something that you used to love? What was it and were you able to find pleasure in it again?

I’ve lost joy in reading novels. I was a strong reader, but now I can’t put my mind in it, I’ve not enough time or tranquillity. I mostly read things about my jobs (role-playing games included) or the news, or things on the Internet. I miss the hours spent on a printed paper novel. Maybe if I had more time, I would return to lose myself in a book.

15 - Where is your room in the Freewrite House and what does it look like?

My room is in the second house since there wasn’t enough space in the original Old Steemian’s Home for us “latter Steemians”. I think it’s on the ground floor and has dark/deep space blue walls with a psychedelic toads motif, red pentacles on the floor, a big rainbow rug which is Lilly’s bed, a barrel of hair gum for my imaginary mohawk (I dip my head into the barrel), and a lot of shelves full of Vogon poetry and Klingon cursing books...oh, and a leather covered, wheeled toilet, propelled by an atomic Harley Davidson engine, which is also a pipe organ!.

16 - What ridiculous thing has someone tricked you into doing or believing?

Well… when I was a child, they sent me to Sunday School..

17 - Scientists have removed your head from your body. They’re going to put it on the body of an animal and sell your body to buy more petri dishes. What animal do they put your head on and why?

      I give you three choices:
      A. A platypus
      B. A chupacabra
      C. Richard Nixon
      Why? Because I deserve it!

18 - What fictional place would you most like to visit and what would you do there?

I would fly to the moon with an hippogriff, so I could search for my wits, like Astolfo in the “Orlando furioso” poem

19 - A tribe of cannibals have captured you and will be cooking you up for dinner. How are you prepared and what are some of the side dishes?

Since I’m stringy and bitter, they should marinate me first in vinegar and a lot of spices, but better they sew my orifices very tightly in order to avoid gas leaks. Then, they should stew me slowly with cabbage, potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, peyote, ayahuasca, and squirrel toenails, until the meat and the gravy are a single gelatinous block of slop.
Some suggestion for the side dishes: pizza-flavored ice cream spaghetti; figurative fig leaves; impeached peaches; beaver’s hair; hard pickles; tender double entendres; pun plums.
Better served cold, thrown in the face.

20 - If you could kill off any fictional character, who would it be and why?

I would like to see Spongebob and Hello Kitty killed by Teletubbies in a feast of blood and guts, then Teletubbies being suffocated to death by eating too many Peppa Pig relatives.
Why? Because I’m good.

21 - You’ve just discovered a new species, who do you do first? Who, if anyone, would you tell? - Full Disclosure: Brisby had a typo in the question but Marco's answer was too great to change it.

“Who” do I do first? Well, in Italian “doing someone” has a sexual meaning. I suppose then I discovered a new species of super female alien who feeds on sex. I wouldn’t tell anyone, of course.

22 - What’s the most backhanded compliment that you remember? How did you respond?

I don’t know if it qualifies, but once I said to Princess Sassy: “I’m fed up with this life, next time I reincarnate, I want to be handsome and stupid!”
She said: “Oh, exactly the same, then.”
      I responded nothing, I was k.o.

23 - If anything in the world could be used as an energy source, what would you use and how?

Either farts or ego. Both fill people and swell them like balloons. I think I should use it for zeppelins, or flamethrowers, or zeppelin throwers.

24 - What mythical creature interests you the most? Why?

I always felt a strange sympathy for the “catoblepas”: a slow creature with the body of a shaggy bull or a wildebeest, a head so heavy that always points downwards, a stare that can turn people into stone, and poison breath due to the diet based only on poisonous vegetation.
I don’t know… it’s outlandish.

25 - It’s movie night in the Freewrite House! How do we pick what to watch and what are we having for snacks?

I think the movie would be chosen via pun wrestling or jelly bean battle, but in the end, Marianne would set order in the chaos picking a casual word from a book and choosing a movie with that word in the title.
For snacks we could have something related to the genre: for horrors and thrillers, salty fingernails; for love stories, rose honey cookies; for fantasy and science fiction, some “tripnuts” and “funacorns”; for tragedies, teardrop soda; for comedies, fried laugh leafs; for porn movies, flambé chili peppers; for western movies, dust and gunpowder chips...

26 - What is a prompt that you’d like used for a freewrite?

      Monkey's wedding.

27 - Toilet paper no longer exists and bidets are considered a waste of precious water. What do you invent for people to use to clean up after using the bathroom?

So, basically you’re describing U.K., lol! (Cut this please, or not...it depends on your degree of politically correct)
Clean up directly on plants to be fertilized. Some new variety with silky, soft, leaves and stem..

28 - If you were trapped in a room with hundreds of unlabeled buttons, switches, and levers, how would you go about trying to get yourself out?

I try to use the switch, the lever or the button that shows more signs of wear...like dinginess, consumption, fingerprints, jam stains...meanwhile, I cry a lot hoping not to blow myself up.

29 - What question would you like to ask your fellow freewriters?

Do you ever laugh at yourself? In which circumstances?

Traduzione italiana

  • il primo è stato "apricot" (giorno 14), un prompt che mi ha portato a parlare della mia infanzia e a mostrare un quadro molto naif di un albicocco che ho amato da bambino, ma giocare con il quale mi ha quasi fatto perdere un occhio all'età di 10 anni (e MyEye è la mia immagine del profilo di Steemit, e in generale di chat / forum / blog, forse c’è della roba freudiana qui);
  • il secondo è stato "dog hair" (giorno 75), che mi ha portato a parlare per la prima volta della morte della mia amata cagnolina Lilly;

      Ti do tre opzioni:
      A. Un ornitorinco
      B. Un chupacabra
      C. Richard Nixon
      Perché? Perché me lo merito!

18 - Quale luogo immaginario ti piacerebbe visitare e cosa faresti lì?

Come hai risposto?

Come scegliamo cosa guardare e cosa serviamo come snack?

In quali circostanze?

A big thank you to @Marcoriccardi, for all of the help that he's given to our freewrite community and for playing along with this interview! To show our appreciation, we'll be giving him the SBD from this post's payout, as well as a membership in the Steem Basic Income program and a vote by Thundercurator!

Ciao Marco! OMG! You should have heard me when I read the questions and answers for #17 and #19. LOL! What interesting minds you both have. This was an amazing interview and I really enjoyed it. And now I know that you were behind Monkey's wedding. The stir you caused was hilarious! You just never know what comes out of the mouth of babes, here at the Freewrite House. LOL!

You just never know what comes out of the mouth of babes

Now, I'm curious!

Thank you for reading! I'm happy to have ripped you off a laughter! :D

That was super fun to read. Sounds like you try to crack jokes at uncomfortable moments. I swear I could hear your laughter... That fear thing is a big one for me. Always worry about what others may say or think, about something I say or do. I'm slowly learning to work through that, and honestly, my postings are helping. Being afraid of ridicule is one I've learned to abolish here.

Yes, @pixiehunter! I absolutely try to crack jokes at uncomfortable moments. Humor for me has always been a weapon to defeat shyness and insecurity, and to soften hard situations. But one thing I learned in my life is to not being afraid of the ridicule. People may understimate me, I do it for sure, but I don't care to have a serious reputation... I do prefer being understimated and surprise than overstimated and disappoint!

So true. I figure if I can get others to laugh, maybe they will like me. Then there are days when I tell myself, they are just missing out on my great personality.

Great interview. The biggest waste of life is indeed "fear". I totally agree with you on this, sir. This sentence is truly touching.

Thank you! In this interview I said a lot of silly things, but mixed between them there are a few moments in which I was serious. The one you noted is one of them.

It really struck the cord of my heart. Great answer was that. There was so much humor in the interview, not silly definitely.

Thank you for your kindness. I wrote silly, but I was meaning humorous.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting! I think many of us agree with you and Marco. When we let fear get in the way of something, we often look back with regret.
Are there any questions that you'd like to have added to the interview mix?
~brisby

You had me at Vogon poetry @Marcoriccardi! Haha.
And this response to the movie night question got my tickle bone.

I think the movie would be chosen via pun wrestling or jelly bean battle, but in the end, Marianne would set order in the chaos picking a casual word from a book and choosing a movie with that word in the title

On a more serious note...I do love how freewriting has been therapeutic for you!

Again @brisby, your questions blew me away!

Vogon poetry has such few estimators!

Thank you so much Freedomtowrite! 🤗 You and Marco will have to pardon me if I skip the Vogon poetry reading at the House though. 😉

I'm so grateful that you enjoyed the questions! Do you have any of your own that you'd like added to the interview list?
~brisby

Hahaha ok...

Well, I don't think I can think of any! You really raised the bar! Lol

Thank you @brisby and @marcoriccardi for an excellent interview. It was funny and deep at the same time!!! And a little bit gross - when you got cooked, Marco, I suddenly didn't want breakfast anymore 🤪
So glad that both or you are Freewriters!!!

I'm sorry, Marianne. We should propose another tag: "nsfb", not safe for breakfast 😅
(Oh...that would be a great prompt idea!)

hahaha!! Yes, let's have that tag!!

We could start a recipe series....😉

Are there any questions that you'd like added to the interview mix Marianne?
~brisby

Really well done guys. Very entertaining.

Thank you Deirdyweirdy! I'm happy that you're enjoying the interviews! Are there any questions of your own that you'd like added to the list that each freewriter is given?
~brisby

I think you have that covered @brisby. I don't think I could improve on your choice of questions;)

First of all, tip! and compliments to my vampire bud @brisby for the originality of the questions! I can see that all those centuries spent in observing (and feeding with) humanity paid off! I feel like commenting all the answers.. there's so much to say about all of them but I'll focus on the following:

13 - What is something that seems small to others but is important to you?
A caress and a smile, a walk hand in hand, a sleep side by side.

But... dear Marco, you could have asked me!!! You know that you are my favorite cuddly God's mistake!! Now I understand all those moments of silence and hesitation during our coffee meeting in the town's square...Worry no more, I got a special permission from Mrs. F3nix and tonite I'll come to visit you. Leave the window of your room open, I'll sneak through it and I will hug you tenderly to my hairy chest, my lovely teddy with tentacles!

Ahahahah! I should ask for a permission from Princess Sassy too, then. 😂

I'm sure she'll be fine! It's just about tenderness. Maybe. 😂

If it's tender, it's fine. Just make sure it doesn't become hard! :P

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed Marco's interview! Grazie my fanged friend for your praise and for the tip. I'll admit that a couple of the more serious questions were inspired by others I've come across over the centuries years. (If the phrase "you are what you eat" holds true, does that make me more human when I feed off of them?)

I was very honored that Marco agreed to the interview! His thoughtful (and damn hilarious) answers were so interesting to read! Each response left me with wanting more. (I wonder if that was his intent?😎)

Do you have any questions that you'd like to have added to the coming interviews?

Happy that you stopped by and I cried with laughter when reading your response to Marco! 😂 ~brisby

Sorry Bris, I'm too busy cuddleing Marco, keeping him tight to my hairy and sweaty chest for giving you a detailed reply 💚 Did you ask him what's his kriptonite?

Congratulations 👏 on a great interview the questions were awesome and the answers incredible. 👍👍

It's been a team work. Without @brisby's questions, I couldn't unleash all that dark humor in the answers

I'll have to add that it was lopsided teamwork Marco. You easily did 90% of the work (which is really how I like any team to operate LOL). 😁Seriously, I loved being able to read more from the mind of my friend and have gone back to read your responses because they delighted me so!

Thank you so much Bruni! Happy that you enjoyed it! Are there any questions that you'd like to add to the interview list?
~brisby

I am so in love with this entire interview. I found myself literally laughing outloud a few times and it was a really WEIRD laugh, too. I sounded like Santa Claus laughing. I don't know what that means about your humor, but there you have it.

I loved the "who would you do first" answer :)

as for the question for the freewriters: Yes, I laugh at myself. Sadly, I mostly only laugh at myself when I think I'm actually being funny. I wish I was better at laughing at myself for my failures, but I can be self conscious when it comes to that. Sometimes. I guess I laugh at myself more than some people do, and not just because I'm so funny :)

FANTASTIC interview!

Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa Claus laugh is like that. Were you laughing like that? Lol!
I know that saying "thank you" sounds cheesy, but... thank you for your comment!
@brisby and I wanted to be funny, at least in a part of the interview, and you are demonstrating us we reached our goal :D

Yes, I actually laughed with a weird 'ho ho ho' I even surprised myself.

You guys were great. I feel like I was listening in on two friends having a chat. The meaningful and serious intermixed with the funny... just like conversations I have with friends. It was fantastic!

Yay!! I LOVE that you loved it! Now I really want to hear your Santa laugh! 😉 I think that we are all tougher on ourselves when it comes to failing at something we've worked towards.

Thank you so much for making the terrific graphic for Marco's interview! Do you have any questions that you'd like added to those the freewriters are given?

This interview is as amazing as you, @marcoriccardi and I am thrilled to get a peek inside your fascinating, intricate, artistic mind. I will carefully read each shared prompt. My only regret is that I missed them until now. Thank you for the window into your soul and humor! I'm so happy I met you here and hope to meet you in Italy when Jeff and I cross the divide! @ciao!

You got it in one Janelle. Marco really is amazing! I'm delighted that you enjoyed the interview and happy to read your comments. Thank you!!!
Are there any questions that you'd like to have added to the list that is given to the freewriters? Each author picks and chooses which they answer and all credit will be given to the person who suggests the question.
