Fresh Floor Wax - Reflections
"Stay off the floor!"
Ally stood in the doorway of her bedroom, pausing at her mother's shout from across the apartment. She wanted to get a bag of chips from the kitchen, but the hardwood surface she would have to cross to reach that goal was freshly waxed.
She sat down on her carpet and peered into the shiny surface, catching a glimpse of her reflection. Her face was only thirteen years old, but in the sepia tones of her makeshift mirror she could imagine herself as a woman.
Pulling her hair up in a twist on top of her head, she examined her future image. Would she care more about shiny floors than about chips?
She couldn't see herself as her mother, she looked too much like her father. But she wasn't her father either.
She was just who she was, and she stuck her tongue out at herself.
"What are you laughing at?"
Ally rose to her feet and let her hair drop back down to her shoulders.
"Nothing, Mom!"
She went back to her bed to wait for the floor to dry.
