BALUT (looks like ass, tastes like chicken)

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Balut is a partially developed bird embryo that is boiled and eaten. Sometimes it is fully peeled and sometimes eaten from the shell. Balut is a Southeast Asian delicacy that is traditionally sold as street food. I decided to bring some into the office and offer $100 to anyone who would finish it. This is what happened...

These photos and videos are of my staff members at Ruffinos on the River in Lafayette, La. Remember @xtrodinarypilot knows his way around the kitchen. I am no longer affiliated with this establishment but I knew this would fun to share. @lily-da-vine have you ever tried Balut?

RAW AND UNCUT

Sort:

I've eaten Balut all of 3 times. 1st time was in Malaysia on a dare and the second time was part of an amuse bouche. The 3rd time was with my staff lol. It isn't as bad as it looks.

I'm tempted to try it and yet half hoping I will never find it on a menu.

Not certain how familiar you are with Houston but we have cuisines from all 7 continents. Balut is widely available here. We even had a local lady get arrested for selling Bush Meat (lions and monkeys to be more specific)

but thats not all that's available here.. jees dude.. as if Texas Chainsaw Massacre wasn't enough for everyone already.. gotta bring her up!

I'll see if I can arrange a video of you trying it or some other questionable dish.

It just tastes like salty soft-boiled egg with a little smell, sir.

me too.. I want to try it now, lol

Man, this is like fear factor. I'm from part of South East Asia.
Even I won't eat this after you tell me it taste like chicken.
Crocodile meat maybe. They said it taste like chicken too.

$100 is too little enticement :-)
Next, you should bring them durian.

Flashback of my childhood when I ate balut for the first and last time:
I didn't know that there was a dead chick inside it, so when I saw that there's a decapitated chick inside the egg I panicked trying to remove the head from my mouth. I now have a small scar on my tongue forever because of the beak that scraped it.

PS: I live in a country where everyone else eats this as their regular dinner.

That would have turned me off to balut forever. I tried live octopus tentacle and that suctioned to my throat. My throat was sore for days after jerking it out.

In my case, I love eating live octopus. :D

hahah.. what.. is there a high risk of that happening when you eat that?

DAY-UM!! That thing sounds like it was going to choke you!
Octopus 1 xtrodinarypilot 0 LOL!!!!!!!!!

The main risk comes from preperation. Then also not thoroughly chewing can cause the octopus to suction up. It's called San Najkti or something like that.

Well here in Michigan we call that Iaint Eatinthat LOL

Ive had it many times growing up its pretty good the broth is pretty amazing. i would recommend people try it at least once.

I agree. It isnt nearly as bad as people make it out to be. When people vomit, it is all psychological.
