Buying Some El Salvadorian Tortillas. El Salvador Life. #ULOG #51 #WalkWithMe

in #food6 years ago (edited)

Today we took a little walk to buy some tortillas which I thought it would be a great entry for the #walkwithme tag created by the awesome @ lindsaybowes.
Tortilla is like bread in other countries, which is a huge part of daily meals.
Tortilla is made out of corn flour and it is served pretty much with every single dish throughout the day.
For breakfast you eat it with some eggs, lunchtime you eat it with some chicken/beef/fish soup or rice with chicken/pork/beef etc.

Most of the time we make our own tortillas every day, but when we have no time or are out, we will buy some tortillas.
Today we run out of tortilla flour, so we decided to go and buy some tortillas.

Tortillas are only sold during lunchtime, so from 11:30 until 12:30 and they are sold all over the neighborhoods since the ladies cook them from their houses or in front of their little stores. The tortillas are pretty cheap to buy and that is why most people buy them instead of making them since they cost around $0.4 - $0.5 each, so when we buy $1 worth, we get 25 tortillas, which is great.

While walking back from the tortilla place we also stopped at one of the little stores, which are also very popular businesses from your own home and there are always little stores like these everywhere you go, which makes it very convenient and they are usually cheaper than going to a grocery store.

I am also a part of one of the most amazing projects here on steemit and that is #gratefulvibes project where you can also join @gratefulvibes Discord chat group, where we support the newcomers and just have an amazing time.

Oh I have been buying these ones for lunch like months already, popular here

That is pretty cool. What country is that?
Are you also in Central America?

No In my native country Latvia, yet when lived in England, there too. I guess in many European countries

hiya @joalvarez.
Over here in the UK we have Tortillas but they look nothing like what you have photo'd, they are between 10 and 12" wide and they are so flat, when you bite into the wrap you can't really taste anything apart from the filling.
We tend to put fajita chicken in ours as it is great when it is wrapped together with red peppers and onion.

The fact that you have them making the Tortillas on the street is amazing to see, ours come from a factory where they make thousands at a time, it cost £1 for 8 now over here.
We have just found a little takeaway shop that makes them by hand and they are really nice, I think they have added garlic to the mix as it has a nice taste to it, and they are a little thicker. we have only eaten from there once as it was on our way home from been out with friends, but I would love to have another one as I think it was one of the best I have ever had.
anyway until next time steemon

I know what kind of tortillas you are talking about because we have those here too and just like you said you buy those from the stores and they are made in the factory.
I love those tortillas for fajitas or burritos, but these are made from white flour.
These tortillas are quite different and they also make those all over Central America, but all the countries make them a little bit different. Some make them skinnier and bigger, some make them smaller etc.
Thank you for your lovely visit @artonmysleeve
Have a lovely day.

I see, nothing beats fresh I bet? I am going to try and make some for my self I keep looking on line for a good recipe but up to now it doesn't look like there is any good ones as of yet. fingers crossed something comes up in the future :D

Wow, tortillas are not expensive at all, you can really get a decent amount for little money, even if you have a big family, which is great! :)

Love those photos of the neighborhood you were passing by. So pretty!

Here in Serbia, we also have family shops, especially in villages and small places.

Thanks for sharing more of your life in El Salvador! Have a great day, my friend! <3

Thank you, my friend.
I know, I really like those family shops, and I like to support them and glad you also have those in Serbia and I remember those in Poland too, which I really liked.
Have a lovely Tuesday @nikolina.

It is nice to eat it with thick gravy dish. @joalvarez and it is very nutritious too.

That sounds good. I should give a try.
Thanks for the tip.
