Here is the secret to make (imitation-so close you won't even be able to tell the difference) Philly Cheese Steaks DYI-style, at home in your own kitchen with this easy-peasy guide!

Vegans and veggie lovers, rejoice, it is friendly to your diets (but I swear to you, all you steak and cheese lovers out there, you're in good hands, I won't let ya down! You'll have to see it to believe it so scroll on down!) Feel free to eat 2 (I did!)

Since I am judging Steemit Culinary Challenge this weekโ€ฆ I was feeling left out since obviously I can't vote for myself! I LOVE participating in SCC and so, I thought- let me make a non-entry to show you guys some encouragement for this week's International Vegan Theme ;)

Are you ready for it? How about Philly-Cheeze-Steaks? Vegan- approved, taste-tested and to die for. (PS: Cheeze with a โ€˜zโ€™ is the vegan form, not a typo!) Can you handle the deliciousness?

I may be Canadian but I grew up on the border of NY and let me tell ya, I have had my fair share of these bad boys from all over the world. I used to be the biggest steak eater you can imagine. I aimed to eat (rare) beef once a day at least. Pack that into the fact that cheese was my lifeโ€™s passion (Italian ancestry) and my obsession with bread and it becomes easy to see why this meal was everything my heart desired!

Trust me when I say I know this dish intimately!

The problem for me was that after I ate them, I always felt bloated, over-full and tired resulting in a lack-luster, groggy rest of the day... or a nap! Not this recipe though!

I am proud to say it packs in all the taste, flavour and texture as the real deal but leaves you no food hangover!

Imagine my devastation when I cut all of the above from my diet! Thatโ€™s right, no more bread, no more cheese and NO MORE STEAK! I had a breakdown and literally cried my eyes out. I even had temper tantrums like a child in the grocery store when I first started this huge life change- thatโ€™s why I always say if I can do it, I truly believe it is possible for ANYONE!

Back to this incredible recipe I knocked out (yes, I am tooting my own horn because it's SUPER delicious you guys!)

Are you ready to find out how I recreated this? Letโ€™s take a look!

What you need:

Steak:

  • 1 piece of tempe (fermented soy patty)
  • 1 tbs cracked pepper
  • Coconut oil (for frying)
  • Himalayan sea salt

IMG_7114 (2).JPG

Cheeze: (no animal products involved!)

  • ยฝ cup soaked almonds (soak overnight)
  • 2 tbs tahini
  • 1 tsp pink Himalayan sea salt
  • 2 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 tsp nutritional yeast
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Coconut oil as needed

IMG_7111 (2).JPG

Cheese Sauce

  • 2 cups coconut milk (or almond)
  • 2 tbs coconut oil
  • 1 tsp pink Himalayan sea salt
  • 2 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 tbs flour (your choice, I used purple sweet potato flour to give it a hint of colour) =D

IMG_7115 (2).JPG

Mushrooms

  • Package of mushrooms of choice (I used 2 packages of oyster mushrooms from my friends at the local organic market)
  • 1 tsp crack pepper
  • 1 tsp pink Himalayan sea salt
  • 2 tbs coconut oil

IMG_7121 (2).JPG

Onions/Peppers

  • 1 onion
  • 3 chilli peppers (I used these red hot ones from my garden but feel free to use bell, habanero, whatever you like!)
  • 1 handful of shallots
  • 2 tsp coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp cracked pepper
  • 1 tsp pink Himalayan sea salt

I didnโ€™t take a picture of this part! Was definitely daydreaming about eating! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ˜˜

Bread of choice!
I am using a gluten free multigrain I got at the market since my body cannot process gluten, but you can replace with whatever kind of sandwich you would like!

  • coconut oil

IMG_7126 (2).JPG

OK so now that we know what we need and have all that sorted out, letโ€™s get to making it (and better yet, eating it!)

What to do:

โ€œSweet dreams are made of cheese, who am I to dis-a-brie?โ€

  • Take all of your cheeze ingredients and blend them in a food processor. Set aside.

IMG_7113 (2).JPG

  • Pour your coconut oil from your cheeze sauce into a pan and let heat, then add in your flour and whisk quickly!

IMG_7116 (2).JPG

  • Add coconut milk to the mixture and keep whisking until it becomes thick. Then add in your โ€œcheeseโ€ and continue to whisk for a couple of minutes until you have a thick sauce like this:

IMG_7117 (2).JPG

  • Once your sauce is thick and cheesey tasting, cover or set aside. Add some extra pepper if you like!

IMG_7120 (2).JPG

โ€Life is like an onionโ€ฆโ€

  • Next up are the onions and peppers!
  • Start by browning your onion that youโ€™ve chopped into thin slices (place in pan no need for oil and let the scent sweep you in!)
  • Once itโ€™s partly browned, add in your thinly chopped peppers, S&P and coconut oil to get things going.
  • Let them mingle for a couple of minutes then sprinkle them with your coconut sugar, bring the heat down and let them simmer for a few more minutes before covering and setting aside.

IMG_7118 (2).JPG

โ€œVegan is a โ€˜missed-steakโ€™โ€ I disagree ;)

  • Cut your tempe into pieces youโ€™d like to bite out of! Hereโ€™s mine:

IMG_7124 (2).JPG

  • I cook my mushrooms and tempe together with the salt, pepper and coconut oil. I like the flavors all blending together!
  • Give them enough time to get to know each other.
  • This is the part where I ask you how you want your steak- cook it to desired โ€˜done-nessโ€™ ;)

IMG_7125 (2).JPG

โ€œLove is like bread, it needs to be made fresh every day!โ€

  • Cut some slices of your bread if youโ€™re using a loaf like me, otherwise get your bread of choice ready to toast!
  • You can toast it if you have a toaster, place in the oven with a light layer of coconut oil or if youโ€™re like me and have neither of those conveniences, a pan with some coconut oil and a keen eye will do the trick.

IMG_7127 (2).JPG

โ€œIndividually we are one drop, but together we are an oceanโ€

Are you ready for this? Letโ€™s assemble the dream team!

Step 1:

  • Put mushrooms/tempe on bread

IMG_7128 (2).JPG

Step 2:

  • Pour โ€˜cheezeโ€™ sauce overtop

IMG_7130 (2).JPG

Step 3:

  • Top with onion/pepper party!

IMG_7131 (2).JPG

Step 4:

  • Let your senses ignite with the tastes and smells of this popular all-time favorite brought to you in this new exciting way!

lol, you had a lot of trouble knocking that bad boy down I can see.
This looks amazing and how come you became vegan

Siliax ?

I made some sushi rolls mmmm I wll be uploading it soon

Haha well, yes... I tend to have bigger eyes than mouth :P I managed though, an empty plate was all that was left of this and a desire to have another sometime very soon!

How did you know that sushi was one of my favorites? You must be doing your homework ;) I cannot wait to see your entry!

As for the story on how I became a vegan, I have been working on that and am going to share it as a special post when I hit 1000 followers because it's quite intense ;) I'll let you know when that happens... I am creeping up there! XO

ahhaha well I guess I will have to wait to find out :D

I have no idea it was your favorite! hahah it is mine too I love seafood

This looks so fantastic! I will try it soon! I already experimented with vegan cheese sauces made from cashews. So this part will be easy!
Your writing is very funny!

Awesome! I am happy to hear that! I make many different cheeses, actually probably about 1 new one a day on average =D I really love it! I hope you enjoy this one, it really surpassed my expectations! Have a great week =D XO

Love it! I'd take this over a regular Philly cheese steak any day, haha.

Awww yes! I am so happy to hear you say that! It just feels so much better in the tummy! I would love it to be shared with the world! I wish we could change our food habits so they didn't harm our bodies so much- I am working on doing my part to help with that =D SO glad to hear you liked it! I hope the Steemitverse gets to see it (and try it) ;)
Have a lovely week XO

I completely agree :) I try to eat organic and local as much as possible and I'm always checking ingredients labels and asking questions, to get to the bottom of what's really going into my food. I really liked that you've incorporated using local ingredients as part of the culinary challenge this week and I think that's such an important part of making conscious choices when it comes to food. Hope you have a great week as well :)

@natashahall that is just such a wonderful comment to read- my heart is just filled with happiness to hear this =D

You're so right and this is what I am working hard to promote- the way we look at food needs some alterations and improvements and I am here to try to make that possible <3

Thank you for your kind words, I am so happy to hear about your positive food choices! I just love hearing about changes people are making for the betterment of their health!

Have the best week my friend =D Keep spreading the love! XO

Your post is so entertaining @heart-to-heart! :D Thanks for being the jugde of this weeks theme! I think it is really great that you took your time to make this awesome looking non entry! :) Upvoted and resteemed!

Hi @alinalisa =D Thanks so much for dropping by! I mean I have to tell you, it was self-benefiting because this was really one of the yummiest things I have had in a while ;)

I am thrilled to judge this week! I love love love food and am truly happy to be so surrounded by it here! Thanks for sharing this- I really want people to see that healthy food doesn't have to be plain and boring! I hope you get to try it out! XO

Oooh this is a very unique recipe and looks super tasty! It can be so difficult when starting out on a new diet to create meals that are as satisfying as meals we used to enjoy before, but with determination like yours amazing food can be created that we really love eating. I like a good success story when it comes to establishing healthier eating as well :-) You clearly put a lot of thought and time into this dish, and no doubt have inspired some Steemians with it! Great entry, good luck @heart-to-heart

Oh you know me, I am I think obsessed with food. I would definitely say it's fair to say that and given our recent conversations am filled with a bunch of vigor to push this movement further into the mainstream eye! I would never sacrifice taste. If I had to give up delicious meals and the satisfaction I get from food just for health, I have to be honest, I wouldn't do it and I would die young if that's what it meant. I know a lot of people feel that way but that is why I am so excited to share the happy medium. It's possible to have the things you want and crave revamped in such a way that it is stripped from the harmful ingredients laced in our everyday foods. Thank you for being such a huge mover and shaker in this @woman-onthe-wing, I am so excited to see where this takes us! =D XO

That's great to hear @heart-to-heart, I'm happy you're so passionate about helping others towards better health! And you're very sweet with your compliments, thank you :-) I'm sorry this is just a quick reply, I have visitors atm so can't spend long online!!! Talk to you soon :-)

We'll have plenty of time to catch up =D Enjoy your visitors XO

You and I are so alike. I used to eat meat bleeding and loved it. Cheese and bread are still high on my must have list. However, the last 3 weeks as a vegetarian had me feeling great and I don't miss the meat. My body gets upset with the cheese, so I can see that soon leaving too. Bread, on the other hand, I struggle to see life without it. However, if I can say good bye to meat and cheese, why not bread?

Hey girl! Oh do I ever hear you! I used to go on dates and rip the steak a part in front of guys, freaking them out haha

I'm happy to hear it's going well for you! It's a huge change so it's a good sign to hear your body is responding well to it! My naturopath always said if you take something away and you try it again later, if you experience any type of discomfort, it's a sign you shouldn't be eating it so I would take cheese as an indication that your body doesn't want it! Plus nut cheese can taste identical- trust me, I eat it almost every meal ;)

I had a really hard time with bread but now it kills me... it sucks the life right out of me but I don't think it's that way for everyone, everyone has a different body and i know people that eat the way I do but also eat bread and are fine with it so it's your own body's rules :)

I'm excited to see how all this goes for you so make sure to keep me updated ok? If you need anything shoot me a message on DC XO

wao! it felt soooo great.....i appreciate ur effort

Hahahah! I told you i was making something really special and it took me quite some time to complete the dish! But i'm really very happy with the final result!
I already posted, just some hours ago!

I am so excited to see it! I haven't gotten to see all the entries yet but I am looking forward to it. I have high expectations for you ;) XO

Wow this was so fabulously written & the pictures are amazing , was laughing along the way, at some of the quirky titles.

Well why thank you! I really enjoy combining the recipe with a bit of story and other fun elements along the way! To me the kitchen is a playground :)
I'm happy to share with you and am thrilled to hear you enjoyed it! I hope you give it a go ;)
Have a wonderful week!
XO

This is definitely must try recipe. I am a big fan of tempeh and I love grilled onion so this must be super delicious. Thank you again for being judge this week. Upv & rsd ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‰

Oh it is more than my pleasure, I am so excited about it I can hardly stand it! An excuse to look at recipes (more than usual) I am all for that task! ;)

I don't eat gluten and therefore usually avoid bread all together but this gluten free loaf was really good and sat well with me too so I might have to use it again in the future! I used it to make breadcrumbs for your recipe but I haven't been able to get that up! All of the pictures I took for it got scrambled because I was also making 2 other things at the same time =D I am so looking forward to sharing it with you soon though and seeing your entry this week!
