If your kid likes Thomas the Train, I highly recommend these themed desserts! No need to be a professional to create these simple yet adorable birthday treats. :)
Cupcakes Train
Ingredients
24 Graham Cracker sheets
48 Marshmallows (medium-sized)
1-2 containers Icing (your choice of color/flavor)
1 box Cake Mix (your choice of flavor)
24 Cupcake liners
Thomas the Train toy engine
Directions
Mix and bake 24 cupcakes (in decorative liners) according to the cake mix box instructions.
While the cupcakes are baking and cooling, work on the bases of the train cars:
Unwrap 24 graham cracker sheets and arrange them in pairs.
For each pair, frost one side of one cracker (does not need to be neat!), then stick the second cracker on top of the icing (should look like a graham cracker-icing sandwich).
Lay down 4 marshmallows (round-side down) so they look like 4 wheels.
Add a dab of icing to the top of each marshmallow, then place one of your graham-cracker icing sandwiches on top (the icing acts as the glue to hold the train car together). Repeat until you have 12 train car bases.
Once cupcakes are completely cooled, frost them with your favorite icing.
Place a dab of icing on the bottom of each cupcake and stick them on top of the graham cracker train cars (2 cupcakes on each car).
Arrange the cupcake cars in a line, as if they are hooked together (can be in a straight line, or a curvy one, whatever shape you want!).
Position the toy engine at the front of your line to complete the train.
Train Number Cake
Ingredients
2-3 containers Icing (your choice of color/flavor)
Black writer icing
2 boxes Cake Mix (your choice of flavors)
1 box Oreo Cookies, crushed
1 package Licorice (optional)
Thomas the Train toy engine
Directions
Mix and bake both cakes according to the cake mix box instructions.
While the cakes are baking and cooling, crush the Oreo cookies to use for your train track.
Once cakes are completely cooled, place them side-by-side, with a little icing between them to help them stick together. Then carve the extra large rectangular cake into whatever number you desire.
After carving, frost them however you want with your favorite icing. Feel free to outline with licorice or other yummy decorations.
When cake decorating is complete, add the train track gravel by sprinkling a thick line of the crushed Oreos in the shape of the number you carved.
On top of the gravel, use the writer icing (or regular icing with a writing tip) to create the tracks themselves...which is simply 2 parallel outer lines with a bunch of closer lines intersecting them.
Position the toy engine somewhere on the track.
