Awakenings

by @f3nix

The hoverbike lay abandoned on its side, the engine still warm. The fine black dust carried by the incessant wind was a snake that crept in every small recess.
From the top of the dune the Tesseract 19 could be seen with the naked eye. The column pierced the black sea of graphite and challenged the dark crimson sky. The awareness of his distance made him wince. That construction was enormous. That impenetrable artifact, Moloch's sharpest tooth.

Intertwined with dust, the warm wind brought an imperceptible howl: the bark of the monolith, an omen of death.

The man waited, a stiff exoskeleton bent over the black sand. The helmet lay abandoned beside him. Soon the team would have arrived.

"Soon you will arrive too and everything will be accomplished, one way or another."

He thought of her smile, her courage, her strength. "My life, how could I've been so reckless to have you involved in all this?" The tears were already kneading blackened as the memories of their happy normality swept over him.

"I can not let them find me like this". He stared at himself from outside: another tower on a dune, far more uncertain than the one that howled his feral wish.

These and other demons echoed within the chambers of his soul, when his eyes met a green sprout. The man stared that little miracle that, against every odd, was striving to affirm its existence. In the midst of that sea of bottomless despair.

The tear finally found its way lingering and bathed a leaf. The man managed to pull himself together and, now smiling, he put on his helmet.

"This Moloch will tremble, time has come for an awakening."

There was a low rumble in the background. He turned his head and saw them coming. Most would have missed them all in black on their hoverbikes they blended into the sea of graphite. He counted eight. They had all made it and that was a lucky start to the night. He thought of her smile one more time as they approached.

My Ending

“Give me a account of the weapons. We are going to be headed to quite a battle and our tech is the only reason we can win this.” he said

“All men have their laser side arms, we have two heavy equipment guys with tools to take down anything big in our way. We have one sniper with the silent action pulse rifle. One medic but don’t doubt his stills with that mini rail gun. The rest of the team has our plasma rifles ready to go. All are equipped with the advandance biometric suits to increase speed and target detection. By the time they know we are there it will be to late sir!” said the team leader

Good they had brought what he needed to get this done. He turn to look at the Tesseract 19. It was time he have the commands and they set off on their bikes. A sharpness came over his mind as they approached. To think even on this new world he had found war again. But he had no choice mankind needed this planet and the Moloch’s didn’t want to share it. They reached a smaller dune near the Tesseract and could see the camps at it’s base. He motioned the men into action.

They spread out and set up the attack with the heavy gunners setting up in the back they would fire fist and by the time the dust was settling the rest of them would be in the camp. The Sniper was back a bit set to watch for anyone that approached the heavy gunners. A body rolled down the hill at them he was doing his job quite well. With that the attack began. To watch them fight was something that always impressed him. The camp was theirs with little fuss.

“Take up defense positions she is coming soon and that was the easy part. Now we have to try and get inside” he said and the team obeyed.

He was looking at the door when the low roar of the hover jet could be heard. She was here right on time and so far everything was working as they had planned. Once they had torn down this impenetrable artifact it would break them. The Moloch would surrender once they had proved that even their old gods were no match for man. She approached with her team carrying the case. That was the bomb she had made. She was sure it would work. Even though all test had proved this structure to be impossible to destroy this was a new kind of bomb that would release micro nanites that would find a way into it and destroy it from the inside out. He had never meant for her to have to fight this war but they needed her mind. When she saw him he could see her relax. Yes he was okay and even if they wouldn’t show it both wanted to embrace.

The new team when to work placing the bomb by the door. They all looked around and once it was set and they had rounded up all the troops they got in the jet and took off. As they reached a safe distance they set off the bomb and waited for the tower to fall.

They looked up at the jet in the air. These men think of themselves as gods. They never did understand what that place was. It was not a holy site it was a jail. That door that could not be open was meant to keep a ancient evil at bay. But they needed that evil now they had been pushed to far. So they waited as the tower fell. Then they watched as the sand pulled away from a dome that was underneath an watched as the first of them camp out of that hole. Their eyes were red dots in their bodies made from deep inside the planet. They watched as the jets fired into them. As they expected they didn’t fall. Then they attacked back and one of the jets fell from the sky. They cheered and left not wanting to face their old foes today.

He was shocked what had happened. What could have those things been? The other jet was gone and he only thing keeping him clam was she was here with him. But what had they done? It was clear there was something they had missed. He had never seen anything on this planet their weapons didn’t work on. The he saw her face, was that a smile.

“At last a new puzzle to solve this should be fun” she said and smiled again at him

Who had she become? They person they needed he knew but he missed that girl he use to know.

Ooo I really like this one! The ending is great, he may have pulled her into it, but, she has very much taken to it! There is a fair bit left hanging, (which isn't a bad thing) the ending works really well, picking up on a subtle detail and weaving it through out to tie it up.

Thank you for reading it.

Damn, I feel as if this was meant as a chapter-closer than say a proper story-ending. Yet withal, the objective to deal with Tessaract-19 has been dealt with and now a new trouble, a consequence, has been birthed even if it had been there beforehand. Nevertheless, nice usage of the military and proper procedures (even if they would’ve and should’ve done the checks a long time ago). Upvot’d and resteem’d.

Hi @stever82, I'm @checky ! While checking the mentions made in this post I noticed that @bannanafish doesn't exist on Steem. Did you mean to write @bananafish ?

Yep that's not going to turn out well!

Ya you never know sometimes we figure out hard stuff.

This is probably one of the best ones I've read from you. Great ending. Your storytelling skills are improving. And this is precisely the kind of story we like to see in the Speculative Fiction Writers of Steemit Discord community. Keep 'em coming.

And I'm also looking forward to your first #farmpunk fiction contest entry. ;-)

A rich metaphor on the human thirst for conquest. They need the planet, despite its secrets and its delicate balance. She loses her empathy and the sense of the challenge to overcome prevails. The environment as a puzzle to tame with cold brain and weapons. Nice!
