Sicario (Film): Review.

in #film6 years ago

After talking about Prisoners and Enemy, both works by director Denis Villeneuve, I decided to watch Sicario, the film made by the director after doing those two movies. In this film the director returns to try a thriller, but without overloading the film with the overwhelming pessimistic pressure of Prisoners and the almost supernatural or philosophical approaches of Enemy, in order to make a work that stands out more for dirty and dark realism.

Year: 2015
Category: Crime, Thriller.
Director: Denis Villeneuve.
Cast: Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Victor Garber.

Plot

The film takes place on the border between the United States and Mexico, where an FBI agent is recruited by the government to fight against drug trafficking. Under the command of an insensitive member of the government forces and a mysterious adviser, the team will begin a mission that will make the agent question her convictions about the war against Illegal drug trade and the limits of the law.

Opinion

Really the director returns to demonstrate his talent to direct film, proposing a slow narration but at no time generates loss of interest in the viewer. Each sequence is a meticulously careful suspense exercise.

We are facing a movie of moments, which is good in a general way, but also allows us to enjoy each scene separately. The beginning of the film is really a great cinematographic work that in a certain way has the power to introduce the spectator into the action itself of the sequence, provoking a sensation of constant danger and helplessness, which is accompanied by a very good sound work, resulting in a film of immersive character. The long sequence of scenes and moments in which the protagonists cross the border is undoubtedly one of the best works of suspense made in recent years.

The performance of Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin is fabulous, she holds the dramatic weight of the film and its interpretation is irreplaceable to get a greater involvement of the viewer, as we will discover all the events through his character, meanwhile , Benicio Del Toro plays very well with the mystery that surrounds the presence of his character, giving the feeling that it is perfectly lethal although he seems calm. Josh Brolin, however, gives us a rather peculiar character, which perfectly serves to complement the cast.

The film becomes a first-rate thriller mainly due to the excellent combination of direction work, photography work, soundtrack and performances. The script decays a little compared to this the rest of the factors of the work, however, the biggest weakness of the film is that it does not reach to generate a greater impact on the viewer, because it does not manage to totally surprise, something that, probably, it is due to the tendency of the director to compromise some things in his films in order to place his characters before moral problems.

And although it is true that a little more intrigue in the film may be missing, the atmosphere of pervasive danger and cruelty manages to keep the viewer entertained, despite the fact that after several minutes it begins to be a bit predictable, ceasing to be an exploration to become an exploitation of moral ambiguities.

The best thing is that the film ends up showing part of a reality that many of us do not have to deal with directly, but still a part of the world's population, with or without blame, must deal with these problems every day. And that, in fact, is something that is reflective and that raises moral questions that the film does not answer for us, but that we must answer ourselves.

It must be said that this film already has a sequel recently released this year, and that I have not seen yet, but I will surely see and also comment.

Score

8/10

I really liked the work they have done in the film, it is quite entertaining and contains a constant pressure load that keeps the viewer entertained. For that reason I recommend it.

Sort:

I started watching this movie, and think I watched 5-10 minutes, but then I stopped (that was half a year ago). But, I have it here on Netflix, so will try to watch it later if I do not end up watching something else suddenly instead!

It definitely sounds like a movie that I would like :)

I know some people who have not liked the movie, as there are always those who may think it is a bit slow, or have aspects that they do not like.

For example, I've never been able to finish watching Zero Dark Thirty, I tried to see it the year it was released, but I failed, for some reason I fell asleep, then I tried to see it again, but I fell asleep again. More I never tried it, maybe I do, it's probably a great movie, but for some reason the two times I tried to see it I fell asleep in the first 8 or 9 minutes. There is an indicated time for things.
