Enemy (Film): Review.

in #film6 years ago

In 2002 the novel The Double was published, written by the winner of the Nobel prize in literature, José Saramago. Eleven years later, in 2013, after filming Prisioners, which is another great film that I have commented previously, Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal decided to continue working together to film Enemy, a new film based on that novel written by Saramago. Today I will talk a little about her.

Plot

Adam is an unstable university professor who suddenly discovers the existence of Anthony, an actor who is physically the same as him. Consumed by the desire to meet his double, Adam follows the lead of Anthony and both are engaged in an obsessive confrontation that will have unexpected consequences not only for both, but also for their respective partners: Mary and Helen.

Opinion

I will be honest with you and admit that after seeing Enemy I felt that I had not totally enjoyed the movie. It is a heavy proposal, difficult to tolerate and so enigmatic that it represents a riddle almost unanswered. But when we analyze Enemy with the depth it deserves, we face an almost emblematic film among those that mix all kinds of genres to tell a story. Enemy is one of those movies that generates both love and hate. Lovers of movies full of theories and diverse interpretations will love it, and those who like the most direct content will probably hate it, especially at its end.

The film tells the story of a university professor whose routine is boring. Sex with his girlfriend is tenuous and not very dazzling. The house is boring and too square. The beauty of life is far from the life of this man. But one day, watching a movie, he notes that one of the characters is identical to him. He decides to look for this actor and finds it: it's his double. And then both must fight against the temptation to play with such an absurd reality. After putting their respective brides into the matter, they will realize that sometimes you can go too far without thinking about the consequence.

The director at all times handles the film with great precision between suspense, photography and the editing of events. The sound and the suspense, the photography, all help to portray a dark world that could be in each city. The end leaves us open-mouthed, of that there is no doubt, you may like it or not, but you can never be ignored such a forceful closure. The enigma and the clues left by the film are very subtle, so subtle, that make it one of those works that serve to return to see and study carefully.

In short, Enemy is a great movie that keeps you fascinated while you watch it, and that offers you enough stimuli so that it never goes completely out of your head because you want to give it a concrete form to be able to assimilate it like the rest of the movies.

Score

8/10

After watching it, I spent several days thinking about everything that happens in the film and, above all, how it ends. The interpretation is a mandatory topic. And I've always thought that any director who dares to force the viewer to think is very brave. Usually when we do not understand something, we do not accept it and we even categorize it as mediocre. Therefore, I recommend Enemy to everyone who likes movies with open endings.
