Journeys Chapter One p23

in #fiction7 years ago

As Jaymes' horse settled into an even walk, next to the wagon, he threw his right leg over the horse and sat facing the wagon. He watched the wagon, intently for a minute or two.

“Jaymes, what are you going to do?” Samantha inquired as she watched him. “I can stop. Really, it won't take but a second.” She was worried that he would fall off and be crushed under the wagons.

Jaymes arched a brow, held up one hand, then carefully stepped from the horse onto the side boards of the wagon. He made it look so easy, but it was really the most difficult task anyone had ever done. He carefully walked the sideboard and tied the reigns to the rails on the tailgate. When he was sure that the horse wouldn't run away, he slipped into the back of the wagon and found a relatively open place and half-stretched out, bracing himself against the side of the wagon. Within minutes, he was fast asleep, head on chest, with his arms crossed over his chest.

Later that afternoon, when the caravan stopped for lunch, Samantha crawled into the back and curled up against Jaymes and closed her eyes for a few minutes. She had just gotten comfortable, when there was a voice from outside the wagon. “Sammie.” When she didn't answer, the voice called out again, “Sammie?” A few seconds later, the Arch Knight peered into the back and saw his daughter curled up against Jaymes. A wry smile crossed his lips as he gazed at the two. After tying his horse beside Jaymes' he climbed onto the buckboard and drove the wagon, when the caravan started again.

A few hours later, Samantha slowly returned to consciousness and noticed that the wagon was moving. Crap, I fell asleep. She cringed as she distangled herself from Jaymes and rose to her knees. She drew in a deep breath and sighed when she realized it was her dad that was driving the wagon. “Dad...” She whispered softly, trying not to wake up the novitiate.

“It's okay,. Kätzchen, geh wieder schlafen. You can drive again later.“ Garan whispered as he glanced back over his shoulder at her.

“Yes, father.” She nodded as she sank back down beside Jaymes and drifted back to sleep.

Sie wachsen schnell, nicht wahr? Garan thought to himself as he relaxed and enjoyed the drive, even though he was breathing in dust thrown up behind the wagons in front of him.

( Kätzchen, geh wieder schlafen – Kitten, go back to sleep. Sie Wachsen schnell, nicht wahr? - They do grow up fast, don't they?)

It is nice to see the story still progressing, Life may have been hard, but sleepy is sleepy. The filling out of the characters, it is always nice to see them being rounded out.
