Journeys Chapter One p11
Twenty years earlier
Defron had been crossed two continents, hot on the heels of the thief that had broken into his castle and stolen some of his family's treasures. To the average person, they didn't look like much: a battered long sword, a silver helm, two daggers, and some average gemstones.
The young prince was very close to finding the thief that had stolen the dagger, when a band of brigands had attacked his caravan. When the young Crown Knight, Patryg, and his first patrol outside of the keep had come upon the battle site.
Without a moments pause, the patrol of novice knights had thrown themselves into combat, taking on the slightly larger and more experienced bandit force. After a pitched battle that lasted almost two hours, the young prince and his unexpected saviors came out victorious, and it was during the meet and greet afterwards that Defron had found one of his missing daggers, on Patryg's belt.
When he had asked if he could look at the dagger, Patryg had handed it over, and watched as the young prince had smiled. “Sir.......?”
“Patryg Marshall, but not Sir, I'm just a Knight Novitiate.” He offered his right hand to the young prince.
“Dennis MacDefron, Prince of Pheron.” Defron accepted the hand. “That's a nice dagger,” he casually gestured to the blade on Patryg's belt.
“This?” the knight inquired. “It's just a dagger that I came across.” He pulled it from his belt and handed it to Defron, who took it and smiled wistfully as he turned it over in his hands.
“My friend...” He paused a second. “I can call you friend, correct?” When Patryg nodded, Defron continued, “Do you see the coat of arms on the hilt?” He lifted it so that the light could reflect off of the design on the hilt. When the knight once again nodded, Defron winked at him. “This dagger was stolen from me by a thief about two months ago, and I've chased it across two continents.” He reversed the blade and handed it back to Patryg. “Keep it, Sir Patryg.” When Patryg blinked and accepted the dagger, Defron continued. “If you ever need any help, just find me and present this to my people. They will understand what it means.”
