Shaniqua looked at the steps. She didn’t move though. She did NOT understand this. She wasn’t the type to rush headlong into something that she was unfamiliar with.
“Fools rush in where Angels fear to Tread” Sally said. " I see that you are no fool.”
“Are you an angel?” Shaniqua asked.
“Yes she is” Roy said.
“Good answer dear” Sally patted Roy on the butt.
” Not in the way you mean dear.” she told Shaniqua.
Both dears seemed to mean the same thing. Shaniqua thought. Hopefully she wasn’t on Sally’s shit list. Things were looking up...hopefully. Speaking of up?
As if reading her mind Sally said " Follow me. I’ll lead. Roy will be behind you if you are in fact, Acrophobic. He’s rather strong and can easily restrain you from hurting your self if need be.”
“That’s good to know” Shaniqua said "Safety first...er..I mean last...er. Lead on.”
Sally stepped on what looked to be perfectly ordinary step. It began to move slowly upward. Shaniqua followed and Roy was right behind her. It would have been impossible to fall off. They were in a fairly large tube. The tube was almost invisible though. She felt that she was riding an open escalator to the clouds. The view was excellent. The further up they went the better it got.
“That’s a real cell phone tower?” Shaniqua asked after the were several hundred feet above the surface, pointed toward the tower. They were getting closer to it as the rose.”
“Oh...yeah. It’s our purloined letter. We use it to hide the arches in plain sight so to speak. For various government permits and such mostly. We also sold the data line to the phone companies that use it. We have exceptional coverage here. An overhead wire supports it. It’s on a float in the middle of the turning basin. The data cable floats too and is longer than it needs to be. We can reposition the whole thing when we need to and not even interrupt cell service. We’ve tested. " Sally said.
Shaniqua hadn’t noticed that earlier when in the taxi. She had lost signal not too far out of town but had regained it. She realized that the signal had become stronger the closer she got to the Restaurant.
“This place is just full of surprises” she said
“You haven’t seen anything yet.” Roy surmised.
