FICTION - Julia's secret - CHAPTER 4
October 6 was always a hard day for Julia. It was always a reminder of her sins and on this day, on what's supposed to be a happy day, she felt ashamed of herself and what she had done all those years ago. She often wondered how no one ever found out about what she did and why nobody ever suspected anything fishy. For years and years she kept checking each and every newspaper article in the area and never was there anything about any of it.
As always, Julia left a note and a gift in the linen closet for Kate. It was an engraved necklace that Julia got from her grandfather on her own thirteenth birthday. By now, Kate knew where to look as she was used to Julia not being around on her birthday, but this is the way Julia planned it all of these years. She never wanted to be with Kate on her birthday as it was too hard for her. Of course, Kate and Tom was always under the impression that Julia didn't have another choice but to work, but actually, that's the way Julia arranged it.
The diner closed earlier that day as there wasn't as much customers as always. That was always the case on Sundays. Unlike every other day, Julia decided not to take the bus but to walk home. The nightmare bothered her and she caught herself thinking about it all day long. She always had nightmares and it wasn't strange for it to be more intense on the night before Kate's birthday, but this time, it felt very real and the details were more accurate than before. Perhaps it's God's way of punishing me, she thought.
It took her about 35minutes longer than usual to reach home. The house they lived in was an old, dilapidated building which was starting to look worse by the day. It used to be her grandmother's house but she left it for Julia. Tom didn't look after it at all. He didn't do any repairs or maintenance and although it was a roof over their heads, he always complained about it.
Julia loved that house since she was a little girl. Her father died from a drug overdose when she was just a baby and her mother became a prostitute after that. By the time Julia was 6 years old, she had been living on and off with three other family members before her mother died. She still wasn't sure how her mother died, but she didn't care. She then went to live with her grandparents in their home. It was her safe place and the only place she ever received love from.
By entering the rusty front gate, she could see that the front door was open and very loud music could be heard from the street.
"Mom! How nice of you to join us!" said a very drunk Kate as Julia entered the door.
