FICTION - Julia's secret - CHAPTER 1

in #fiction7 years ago (edited)

Julia looked around the room and couldn't believe what she saw. The last thing she remembered was coming home from work the night before. She worked at a diner and often had to work late. Sometimes customers went home early and at other times, the last customers went home too late for her to catch the bus so she then has to walk home. That's what happened last night. He didn't give her a chance to explain why she came home fifteen minutes later than usual, he just started accusing her of being a bad mother until she couldn't take it anymore. What happened after that is a mystery.

As she stood in the kitchen staring out in front of her, a noise came from the other room, startling her. She stood still trying to figure out what it was. Is it the dog? No, it sounds more like a dog breathing heavily, like a huge dog... No, it sounds like a big dog choking, that's what. One thought took her to the next and before she really knew what she was listening at, she heard the words that a mother dreads hearing...

"Mommy! Help me!"

The voice sounded like it was in pain. Julia froze and her heart nearly stopped as she recognized her daughter's voice behind the thought. She could feel the blood draining from her cheeks and nausea pushing up her throat.

"What have I done?" Julia screamed out as she saw her hand covered in blood. On her lower arms there were drops of blood and as she stood there, her senses lit up like it was on fire. Suddenly she could hear the silence, a deafening silence and the sound of her scream still ringing in the back of her head. She could smell the blood in the air and she felt the wetness below her bare feet on the kitchen floor.

"Katie, where are you?" she shouted. She tried moving but the blood below her feet prevented her from moving as fast as she wanted to. It was slippery and felt very unreal.

The closer she got to Kate, the more her heart raced. Walking past the dining room, she noticed how unorganized the chairs were. One was broken. The vase that normally stood in the center of the table was shattered on the floor and the lilac curtains were ripped. It was then when she saw Kate's feet sticking out behind the table. Her body was covered in blood and pieces of glass stuck to her body like mosaic.

"Katie!" she cried.

Julia sat on the floor holding her daughter's lifeless body against hers. There was no sign of life. There was nothing she could do, not that she would know what to do anyways. An ambulance? The police? She couldn't phone any of them. What would she tell them?

Tears rolled down Julia's face and she repeated the same question over and over again.

"What have I done?"
