The Making Of A Food Fight Friday Contender - Editors Cut
A food #blog has to have a good cover image—you don’t want to miss fire a cover shot. You can get away with miss fires on any other topic, even #art, not all art is aesthetically appealing but it’s still considered art. #Food, however, not so much. When you’re looking at something that’s meant to be eaten but you can’t eat it, it has to look inviting.
What? It’s food related. How many times have I said I’m practicing with the GoPro so we can record @puravidaville in the kitchen? Well, we did it. 👍🏿 If you haven’t seen our first attempt at filming a #recipe yet, please stop by her page and check it out—thank you!
This @foodfightfriday contender is a tutorial—how we filmed and edited this 1:16 movie clip which I’ll link again right here and one more time here just in case you missed the first three. 😉 First—prepare her temporary prep and work station at our current temporary living location. Food processor, spices, cutting board, everything you see in the picture below but it all had to fit inside the “narrow” view of the GoPro lens that was positioned about 12 inches above the food processor:
We’ll experiment with other camera angles in the future. This time we left the camera stationary during the 25 minute recording with a tripod and an extension which we then transferred to an iPad:
The camera records in 10 minute intervals so we ended up with three different movie clips to combine and edit in imovie for iPad.
See all of the clips that are in sections at the bottom of the screen in the above image? That’s where you do your editing: cuts, splits, etc. and the top of the screen is your current movie. On the right side of the screen are additional editing features like photos, where you can add images, audio to add music or mute existing sound.
I tried figuring all of that stuff out on my own when I made this video of Pura playing catch with seagulls—it took forever! Then I searched for information online, read a little bit and watched some tutorials before finding this YouTube tutorial by BitByBite—great instruction manual! Anyone who’s interested in learning iMovie should watch that 25 minute tutorial, twice! Once just to watch and listen and once while mirroring his actions, then make one short movie yourself and you’ll be pretty tuned up.
If you want to add a logo like we did, there’s appropriate steps to take there too. You’re not supposed to just freely copy and paste images you find online, it’s called copyright infringement. What that means is, you made a profit off of an image that didn’t belong to you without asking the original author for permission. A ‘link’ confirming where you stole the image from is just a link, not permission. That’s easy to avoid, there’s plenty of Creative Commons websites that offer the use of images for free that aren’t bound by copyrights. Pixabay is usually where I search first but Pexels and Unsplash are reliable too. Then all you have to do is find a television at one of the Creative Commons sites, use Adobe mix to cut it out, Photoshop to add “Puravision” and Adobe mix again to paste it on anything you want legal like your wife’s cover images.
Then, Ed did what Ed does and, without actually saying it, he pointed out I should draw the tv myself—touché, sir! Last but not least—music.
Using protected music for a profit is the same thing as making a profit off of someone else’s image(s), does it make sense now? There’s many copyright free YouTube channels, probably hundreds, just sign in and search “Creative Commons.” Pura chose this Wicked Game cover by Max Oazi. If you’re an iOS user, you’re going to need to convert the YouTube audio to a file iTunes recognizes—don’t worry, I already did the leg work.
iOS users will need this Documents by Readdle application available in the App Store. It’s simple to use and their explanation of how it works is much better than mine so I’m not going to try.
Once your music is converted, it will automatically save in iTunes. Now go back to iMovie. On the right side of the page, click Audio and your iCloud folder will appear, click on the track you just converted from YouTube and you’re done—now you can add the song to your video and edit it in iMovie too.
I think that pretty much covers it. Ok, skimmers, you can come back now! I’m sofa king proud of her, can you tell? 👍🏿 Like anything else in this #life, we’ll only continue to get better from here and, before long, she’ll be doing something like building her own website called Puradays dot com. Remember earlier when I said See it?

What, you're turning into a tec. genius right in front of our eyes. I know, having time to do what ever your heart desires is a really cool thing. Maybe one of these days I will break out that Gopro I bought a year ago and give it another try, but for now I am just going to sit back and wait for another episode of @dandays and @puravidaville do their thing in perfect harmony.

Coolest dude I’ve never met. The whole cooking thing is new to me too, sir. The only reason I got in on it in the first place was to give Pura a reason to register a Steemit account—true story. I had no idea it would go on this direction and, I’m not gonna lie, I’m pleasantly surprised.
What I’m trying to say is, if you’re having fun at #fff, we’re one for one and you might should probably kinda maybe sorta but really try out some of this trick videography stuff with the GoPro, it’s a lot of fun! Being in Central America right now without the conveniences of the US, I wasn’t able to call an 800 number or walk into a Best Buy for help—it was pretty challenging. It took me quite awhile to get comfortable with imovie. Well worth it, though! I can’t wait to make another one but I’m even more excited to see where this takes us—the possibilities are exciting.

radiologic technologist for over 40 years, I was able to learn medical imaging from hand developed x-rays all the way through the advent of digital imaging, cat scan technology, nuclear medicine scans, sonography and mammography . Each new software change, was a challenge, but I know how to persevere, I can be taught, I promise

Howdy sir dandays! Hey there's lots of things in life that I've not continued to get better at. In fact many things I've gotten worse at! But anyway this is a good job on the making of that video, I thought it was pretty darn cool so I expect the next one to be better since you always get better at things.
Wait’ll you see the next one 67! These recipe videos are a lot of fun, I’m looking forward to trick videography, I have some ideas, now I just need to figure out how to put them on paper.

You’re too kind, sir. I tried using Dtube my last two videos but it gives me an error code after I’ve attached everything the way they want it attached. I don’t know what it could be. The first video I did with the birds worked fine, I’ve had trouble with it ever since so I had to use YouTube.
Oh yes sir, tricks by cutting and pasting. I’m thinking of things like rather than cutting a cucumber in high speed, for example, just cut out the frame where the cutting process is and show one clip where her hand is over the cucumber and then snap her fingers to the next clip and the whole thing is cut. Something like that?? 🤔
Howdy tonight sir dandays! well sir, I've heard of almost everyone trying to use dtube having tremendous problems with getting them to load or work so I think they need to work on their system to make it more user friendly yes?
Yeah I like your idea with the video! I bet a year from now your videos are going to be stellar, you'll both be famous, the royal couple of dtube, and the money from the posts will be really good. If the price goes up even a little your videos will be making $40 or $50 each post I bet.
