Feathered Friday: Ravens & Crows

#featherfriday is hosted @keithboone.

Check Here for info and send some birds Keith’s way.

It can be difficult to tell the difference between a raven and a crow. They are both black and belong to the same family.

The ravens here on PEI are much larger than the crows. That’s how I tell them apart.

I have two ravens that often stop by the backyard checking if any food left from what the other birds have eaten.

Ravens and crows are both black in color but the raven is bigger in size and the beak is larger and curvier than that of the crow.

Most ravens I’ve seen travel in pairs while the crows tend to be more sociable and are often seen in groups.

Many people can tell the difference between the two species by the shape of the tail feathers. The raven's tail resembles a wedge, compared to the rounded fan-like shape of the crow's.

Is this bird in flight a raven or crow?

Thanks @esteemapp. Appreciated!

Great photos and explanation. So was that 4th picture a raven or a crow? I would say the tail is fan-shaped, so I'll go with crow. What we have mostly are crows and they travel in large groups. Thank you for supporting Feathered Friday! voted and resteemed :-)

Thanks Keith. Sometimes it’s hard to tell wedge from fan-shaped. I thought it was a raven by it’s size when I took the photo. The crow’s tail is straighter across.

Ok, thanks - I'd have to see them side-by-side perhaps. I'm sure you are correct :-)

Yeaah, when you see a Raven next to a crow, the size is really apparent. We have a lot of Ravens and Crows in Alaska, and they both love to harass the Eagles.

That’s how I tell the difference as the crows here are quite small in comparison.

Nice silhouette and contrast😊📸

Howdy redheadpei! Wow then we must have Ravens around our place because those guys are huge, like as big as hawks! Thanks for the explanation. And the cool pictures.

Welcome and thanks Cowboy @janton. Yes the ravens can get quite big.

Howdy today redheadpei! The ones we have here must be pigs because they're not just tall but fat! lol, they're huge.

Haha Cowboy...I heard everything is bigger in Texas. 😊

howdy again redheadpei! That is so true and so many things are like spiders and mice. When we first moved here we had the biggest spiders we'd ever seen. Regular spiders but the size of tarantulas. And one night we were in the garage and the ladder to the attic or ceiling of the garage was down and a mouse was sitting on the top step just looking at us and we stopped in our tracks and stared because the thing was at least 8 inches tall and had great big ears, it was the size of a small cat, it was huge! We were in such shock we just left it alone and went and bought alot of poison.

Haha Cowboy. Are you sure that mouse wasn’t a rat.
I can only claim huge anthills here. 😂

howdy again redheadpei! oh, wait till I tell you how big the ants are here! lol...no I'm just kidding but it wouldn't surprise me. No, that mouse was a giant mouse, not a rat. Thank goodness we haven't seen any rats down here, they're probably the size of a racoon.
Oh! The racoons down here, you wouldn't believe how big they are, I forgot about that! They are gigantic. The first time I saw them was at night and I had no idea what they were until they got closer. They're as big as a large breed dog, maybe even taller, I was shocked. They're as big or bigger than Jack and he's medium large, about 72 pounds.

This is what the buffalo thinks about that huge raccoon. 😂

Great photos! I would have gone with Keith on the bird in flight being a crow, so I guess it can be hard to tell without taking more than the tail into account. We have mostly crows around my place I think...it's murder

Thanks @kunscj. It’s hard to tell the difference. I’m not 100 % but it was a large one. Yes, a group of crows is called a murder....unusual word to describe them.😊

A great selection of bird photos @redheadpei They make superb contrasts against the sky with their feathers being so dark. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. 🌺 🌻 🌺

Weekend has been good, Trudee except another snow storm scheduled for tomorrow. Have a wonderful week ahead and thanks for your lovely comments. 😊 🌹
