Trees In and Around Benalmadena

in #esteem5 years ago

Yesterday, I talked about why the trees and flowers in Benalmadena are green, lush and beautiful because there is no shortage of water.

However, outside of the town, things can get dried up very quickly because it is hot and dry in Spain. And fires could start up easily. We saw one from our window just recently. There was a fire on the hill side, and it was spreading rapidly up the hill. Luckily the fire was brought under control by helicopter dumping water, and air crafts dropping fire retardant, and the 80 firemen fighting the fire on the ground.

The incident caused a eight kilometer tailback on the motorway.

Anyhow, I digressed. Today, I will post pictures of some of the more interesting trees in and around Benalmadena. I have talked about the Orange tree, the Loquat tree and the Fig tree. The Orange tree is by far the most common tree in Benalmadena. They are all over the place – on the sides of the streets.

This is the Kapok tree, or Ceiba Pentandrea in Spanish. I have written about it last year. You can read about it Here

Now, there is an olive tree very near to the aforementioned Fig tree which I posted a few weeks ago. I didn’t realize that it was an olive tree until my friend, Roger pointed it out to me.

Olive oil is an integral part of Spanish cuisine, and Spain is the biggest producer of olive oil in the world. Apparently, Spain is home to 300 million olive trees. The life span of an olive tree is between 300 – 600 years, and there are over a hundred varieties of Spanish olives.

In most of the Spanish restaurants here, they will serve a small plate of olives as a side dish.

Lemon trees are also common. But they are usually found in people’s gardens.

Here are some of the unusual trees I saw in the area. Some of them have weird fruits, which I am sure are inedible.

The fruits on the trees look like olives, but they are not olives.

This is a very unique tree which I like very much. The leaves are of two colours - green on one side and greyish on the other. When there is breeze, the leaves turn this way and that, and in the hot sun, they seem like little mirrors. Very mesmerizing.

There are many of these trees in the area. They look majestic and seem like hundreds of years old, with the air roots, or are they vines looking like beards.
