Orange Trees
In Benalmadena, orange trees are a common sight - mostly by the side of the roads, and in courtyards. They are planted for decoration purpose only because although they bear fruits, nobody uses it. Mind you, the oranges are too bitter to be eaten. They are not the kind you find in supermarkets or stalls. This variety of orange is for making marmalade.
Orange trees blossom in March, and the oranges take about a year to ripen. Some ripen earlier, some later. There are still some oranges on the trees from last year's blossom. The trees are lush and green and trimmed so neatly that unless you pay attention, you will not notice the oranges. Young oranges are green and they blend in with the colours of the leaves. The leaves also covered the ripe ones from sight. You have to stand under the trees and look up to see them.
When we went to the Meson la Mezquita restaurant the other night, we sat in the courtyard under an orange tree. This was the view when I looked up. I don't know what extra ingredients went into our food, but I am just glad no ripe oranges dropped on us.

I didn't know, that the orange trees were so big. Last year I bought two small bushes in a discount store, one is a lemon bush and one is an orange bush. In winter I have to put them in the cellar because it is much too cold for these bushes. This year the lemon shrub even has beautiful flowers and mini lemons on it. That's probably because it's very hot this summer. But the orange bush does not like bloom yet and of course it has no fruit on it. I really like it when trees blossom and then bear fruit. Isn't this nature wonderful?
I am glad that your lemon tree is already bearing fruits. Maybe the orange tree needs a couple of years for it to be mature enough to bloom and bear fruit. Yes, nature is wonder-ful. :-)
My mother and father-in-law bought a retirement place in Arizona and they had one of those orange trees in their front yard, as did every other condo on their street. Every morning there was a clean up crew that came through and picked up all of the fallen oranges off people's lawns. Not that there is anything wrong with marmalade, but it always seemed silly to me to plant orange trees with oranges that you can't eat!
Yes, it does seem kind of strange to plant an orange tree with oranges you can't eat. :-) Over here it is for decorative purpose, I guess. Maybe they don't want people fighting over the fruits. :-)
