Anecdotal changes. The Importance of Sharing | EcoTrain Question of the Week

EcoTrain Question of the Week

Name one small change you have made or could make to your life that would be of great benefit to the world if everyone did the same.

Support keeps things moving. It allows them to continue their place in whatever walk of life they exist. Negative things get support as much as those considered positive do. But, as we all know, those words, positive and negative, are defined in the eye of the beholder. So, how can we figure out and agree on what is negative or positive? If we ever do, how then can we change and maintain our newly found ways to help others live a healthy and satisfying life?

My suggestion to this dilemma is to share our personal stories with anyone that listen and hope others do the same. Because without others sharing their experiences, I don't believe I would be living the lifestyle I am today.

Scientific study after study can and often do get varying results. Many times the scientific "evidence" is so contradictory to another study, it becomes laughable and completely unbelievable. Take for instance the idea of the human diet. Eat meat.... good, some will say. Others have difficulty just seeing or thinking about consuming a dead animal. So, who is right? Or, what is right?

Over five years ago, my husband and I finally completed our transition to a mostly unprocessed, plant based diet. It took many years of slowly doing things differently. It started with the little things, like skipping a slice of cheese or using humus in place of mayo. Never did either of us think we could just wake up vegan. We knew once we decided to attempt this massive transition we would need time, patience, and the strength to ignore the hunger our stomachs were irritated with. Our bodies still craved and were telling us to eat all that stuff we were used to. But we knew it was a trick. And this trick wasn't funny or amusing. Being hungry when you know you really don't need food is where it all begins, and it's not all that fun. We started to understand that maybe hunger isn't really all it seems to be and eating often might just be overrated. So, we used freewill to it's full extent and slowly our brains forgot about a few of those foodstuffs we had once accepted as food. It took time and many days of being a little irritated with ourselves and the world, but then, one day, those screaming cries for calories stopped.

Our Plant Based Meals

During the transition period, no matter how many vegetables, fruits, or nuts we ate, there was always a craving from the past that would linger. But once again, a day came when those too stopped. Our bodies had changed. Our minds had changed. We truly could not believe we had been fooled for so many years about what tastes good, or what is considered healthy. Fresh vegetables and fruits became as delicious as any great tasting concoction from our past diets. In fact, most of the "foods" we once salivated over, now did nothing to our taste buds. When we first realized the flavors we used to love now tasted like something from a laboratory, we knew our bodies had previously been put on a misleading path. And what a wake-up call that was. Eating became easy and unfiltered. No more mix this, or cook that. It was pick this or peel that instead. And the ecological footprint we had once left was being washed away. We were now building up the ecosystem. We became aware of just how detrimental our past diets were to the world and I must admit, that fact really stuck, as it was one of the most surprising consequences of the food industry that came to our attention.

Our experiment and experience with diet started with stories from others. Some came from medical doctors, some from dieticians, but most came from people like you. Just everyday people that had been lead down the wrong path. People that had no reason to embellish. People that came to the same conclusion we finally did. Sure, they were just sharing what many will label anecdotal, but without those stories, I probably wouldn't be sharing mine. And as anecdotal as it may be called, it changed me forever. So, please share your personal experiences. Even if you are a rare case, there will be a soul that will seek you out. It's now part of the way so many seek knowledge and I am very thankful for it and those that made and continue to make it happen.

This is so true! Sharing is definitely caring. Without your support on here I probably would have given up again. I admire you and your husband's determination to become plant based vegans. I'd love to see you share some of the recipes for those plant based meals! They look really yummy. <3 xx

Aww, you have no idea how happy you made me from what you said. It makes me feel good to help you and really it goes both ways. We are here to support each other.

I am not one who is creative enough to create my own recipes, but I will definitely be sharing some of the best vegan recipes I have come across. As always, thank you for your comment beautiful lady!

I love the personal experiences on STeemit too and believe we all need to share and listen to each other to become better people. I adore your posts and I love this one - and look at the bounty you pull from your land! You must be brimming full of vitality - I've eaten so much today that I need a fast day and a few days of moong soup to get back in balance and some free will to not stuff myself full of winter stodge haha!!!

Hey there @riverflows thank you for your comment. I had to look up "moong soup" & "winter stodge". If you hadn't share them, I wouldn't have known they existed, lol. Thanks for "SHARING"... haha

Ha... sorry for speaking foreign! He he xxxx

So love this! I have been thinking a lot about how much it bothers me that personal experiences are dismissed and how academia often shuts down and excludes a different kind of wisdom. In any case, we do eat meat, though i was vegetarian for 14 years and vegan for 6, but here in belize we have no access to hardly any processed foods. When i went back to the US, that stuff tasted nasty and made me so sick.

Yes, a lot of food is processed here in the states. I am not sure if most people even know what real food tastes like anymore. The way the farm animals are treated in slaughter houses nowadays makes eating meat part of the problem in the US.

I truly believe sharing our personal experience is very important. It shows a different side of story and different kind of wisdom. Thank you for your comment!

You are most welcome. Thanks for bringing attention to such an important issue. I grew up on processed food, and it took me a long time to adjust, but it is so much better. It is incredible to me that factory farms aren't illegal yet. They're so disgusting.

oooh yeah,, what a good answer.. id not have thought of this one.. and im the kind of person who rarely wants to share my stories because i always think people arent interested or something.. but you are right,, we should share our stories because we are also sharing our experiences.. which are often quite valuable!

I am dealing with some health issues now and if it weren't for people writing blogs and sharing their stories and experiences, I would still be in the dark and would have no clue as to what I am dealing with. Doctors have been no help. It was people who had gone through the same issues that helped me to be on the healing path. Keep sharing your stories, even when you think people might not be interested.

@thelaundrylady that was a very interesting and informative read. My family and I are now slowly transitioning to an all plant based and unprocessed diet. We used to have a friend who would be here a lot and he would let the kids talk him into buying them crap (potato chips, candy, cookies etc.) and then when it was around, they wouldn't stop until it was gone. I noticed that the more they had, the more they wanted and the more crabby they became after eating it or when I said stop. So I decided to ban all sugar from the house. We do use honey and agave syrup (and occasionally brown sugar, but that is being replaced more often now too). It makes such a difference already! The funny thing is, it was my youngest son who got me thinking the most about changing and stop eating meat. He is 4 next week and was pretty much vegetarian from the beginning. One time he told a visitor: "They eat dead animals, but I don't." That really struck something in me! It sounds horrible when you hear it like that, and it is! It's awesome to learn from such a little, wise soul who seems to know certain things better than we do! Just one more thing, I am not sure what kind of health issues you are dealing with, but if you have a chance, look into German New Medicine (just google GNM and the symptoms/illness). I've been studying this for the last 5 years now and it has helped me 'see' more about certain ailments and their causes. We haven't seen a doctor in years!

That is great @misslasvegas and thank you for sharing your story! This post has already paid out or I would give your comment 100% upvote from me. When my younger sister was pregnant with her son, she could not stand the smell or taste of meat. After her son was born, she went back to eating meat and her normal diet. Once her son was old enough to eat solid food, she realized her son hated meat and would not eat anything with meat in it. I guess the little guy was destine to be a vegetarian even before he was born. I think we can all learn a lot from little ones. They are innocent and are perfect observers. They tell you like it is ... "You are eating dead animals". I have an image in my head how that whole thing went down, lol. Your youngest son is a wise little guy!

I am going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal right now. I have been dealing with this for a year now. It is caused by using topical steroid prescribed by my dermatologist. I have some horrific photos of me and plan on warning people about this when I heal completely. Maybe I should do a post on this soon, so more people can be warned and not have to go through this hell. The only way I was able to improve my condition last year was eating a raw plant based diet. I am thinking about doing a fully raw cleanse again to beat this major flare up I am dealing with right now. Thank you for letting me know about German New Medicine. I will do a search to read more. I hate doctors but I went to one to make my folks feel better, but it backfired on me. I learned a lesson. I should always do what's right in my heart. Thank you for commenting!

You're absolutely right, you should do what you feel is right in your heart and not listen to other people's opinions (well, listen and make up your own mind). That's terrible that you have these issues. I had no idea that topical steroids could do that. But please do look into GNM, because even though your issues have been caused by the medication, in GNM it is explained that it was actually caused by something else as a response. This seems very true if you look at the fact that not everyone has these kinds of responses. You have it, and some others maybe as well, but not all people who've used it. Usually issues with the skin come from a feeling of feeling dirty this can be literal (like having been soiled by dirt, feces etc.) or non literal: a dirty situation in life, like having been insulted or bullied... The trick with GNM is to find the reason, accept that this is what it was and then move on. In my experience, the issue will dissolve rather quickly (sometimes days, sometimes a bit longer).I plan to start writing about German New Medicine here too, because not a lot is known about it yet, and there are a few misconceptions and lies out there about it. I have done the studying as well as case studies and seen with my own eyes that it all added up! As for my son, yes he is an intelligent and wise little being. All my kids are blessings to me (4) but with him I look at him daily and think I am the luckiest person in the world to have him after I already had three amazing kids. He brightens up all our lives here, the kids adore him (and he knows it hehe). He's my wild child, the one that has never and will never (unless he chooses to) set foot in a school and he is already teaching me more than I teach him! He thinks about everything. Besides meat, he also had us think about eating vegetables. We were learning about plants and planting some seeds and I explained that plants were living things too. He then asked if they wouldn't feel pain if we cut and eat them. This reminded me of (some) Buddhists who apologise to their vegetables before they cut it and thank it for nourishing their bodies. I have always loved that and have done it for a while. Then forgot. He reminded me so I explained it to him. Now he apologizes to and thanks the food with me when I prepare it :) I think that is truly where the 'saying grace' comes from in the Christian faith. Being grateful for what we have and that our food (even plants) give their life so we can live (and even that is not 100% sure, as I personally know a woman who lives only on water...) It is nice to connect with you and I am looking forward to read more about your journey. I hope your health issues will disappear soon! (maybe detoxing with zeolite could help? It's one of the best...cilantro as well)

The way you speak of GNM is very similar to a guy I follow called "Medical Medium" (Anthony William). I know my condition is triggered by Topical Steroid, but it does seem to be more than just the medication. It is caused by something else deeper. A liver detox is what I need to do to help with my condition. The Medical Medium talks about using cilantro and wild blueberries to do heavy metal detox. I have heard zeolite mentioned several times, I need to look it up.

I apologize to the plants when I harvest as well, lol. I thought I was the only crazy one.

Thank you for taking the time to write. I have truly enjoyed the conversation we had. I will research more.

It's so nice to hear your story, your veggies and food look so good! I've never tried those old foods that u talk about but I know what u mean like I felt obliged to eat a cake someone made and it was too sweet and also a friends soup was way too salty. They are very common for ppl not eating naturally they crave these two extremes aswell as extremely spicy or pungent, all things I used to like alot into the old days but now I'm just more interested in raw flavours. One of my non vegan friends was shocked to see me eat just a salad of raw veg and no dressing because she thought it would have no flavour but tasted perfect to me. It's so fascinating but I also feel quite sad for those ppl still hooked on it

Thank you. That's exactly what I am talking about. I used to feel obligated to eat a bite or two of things friends and family make and I almost always regretted it. Too sweet, too salty, too spicy, too oily, etc. Now I just tell everyone I have a strict diet, so I don't offend people. I put myself on a raw plant based cleanse for 28 days last year and have noticed how my taste buds changed. Now I can just squeeze some lemon juice on top of my salad, add some cilantro and dill from the garden and I am good to go. Food can taste so natural, clean and full of flavor if we would just stop drowning everything in sauce, salt and sugar. Thank you for your comment.
