This is a very important topic to cover when it comes to dieting. "WHY DID I GAIN WEIGHT FROM YESTERDAY?" is a question that comes up quite a bit with the online clients that I coach and I always try to help the person understand that it is close to impossible to actually add 5 lbs of fat in a week as you would literally have to be eating in excess of 5-10k calories every day, which most people couldn't do even if they wanted. Let alone having 30-70k calories in a single day.

Don't worry, it's not fat...

Instead, that weight that you see fluctuate quickly upwards and downwards is a combination of subcutaneous water (water held under the skin but on top of the muscle, which gives a 'soft' look to the body) and fluctuating levels of muscle, liver and blood glycogen. When a person eats a diet that varies a lot it will cause fluctuations of water due to the change in sodium levels in the food as well as many other factors such as sugar levels, preservative levels, allergens, etc.

This water weight fluctation can actually be triggered by quite a few other factors as well so it's important to not lose your head when the scale moves up or down in excess. Menstrual cycles, stress levels, sleep, alcohol, drug use, hydration levels all play heavily into your water retention but again none of this weight is "real", meaning that it is not permanent weight added...rather a short term response to what you've done in the last 24-48 hours.

Rest easy.

Dieting is difficult especially if you are new to it and not preparing mentally can really lead to a lot of troubles! Instead of going into your new diet blind and having to deal with emotional responses to things that happen now you can keep your cool and HODL on! You know that your 7 lbs increase from last night is not fat and you don't have to abandon the whole diet, instead eat a bit more healthy, fibrous foods, eat with a lot less sodium that and drink plenty of water and you'll see how quickly that water weight goes away!
