"Dear Dawne - Let's Talk Formatting"

Season 1 - Episode 8

We Have An Experienced "Steemit Personal Mentor" To Help You Directly!

(Also Newbie Nickels Added Again This Week!)

General Topic: Let's Talk Formatting

Let's Talk Formatting...

Have you visited a post and thought, “WOW! Look how professional that looks! How do you do that?” I know in the beginning days and weeks of steemit I did that often.

I mean, I know how to write and blog.I know how to express my thoughts, knowledge and share with others, but what I was clueless about was formatting. Sure I had some html and markdown coding knowledge, but not enough... or so I thought.

Having an aesthetic post can make or break potential Upvotes resteems and comments.

Newbie Nickels (Available to EVERYONE for TODAY ONLY, Newbies only after that)

Anyone can play. Anyone can join. You don't have to be a newbie, to win this Newbie Nickel.

First, a Newbie Nickel is something that we at the #newbieresteemday initiative use to incentivize the newbies to play games or enter contests. Its a $0.05 upvote on their entry in the game/contest and it guarantees them something for making an effort. For some newbies this $0.05 is more than they can make on many posts, so it is indeed a way to earn "something" and to learn/engage at the same time.

How To Get Your Newbie Nickel TODAY ONLY On This Post

#1 Leave a comment to Dawne on this post. It must be a question directed at her asking for her help, or it must be a relevant observation to her topic of the day.
#2 If you leave a comment and Dawne responds, you can earn a "bonus" Newbie Nickel for a relevant additional comment to her. Note: that is (2) Newbie Nickels just by engaging Dawne and following up respectfully with her replies!
#3 Resteem this post and tell me about it in the comment section and I will give you a 1 Newbie Nickel for that! You must leave a comment to me (@davemccoy) so that @goldendawne only focuses on her discussions.

Got it? You can earn up to (3) Newbie Nickels today just by engaging in thoughtful and engaging dialogue!

When: Today!!!

We are proud to present the news that #newbieresteemday and @goldendawne have teamed up in a partnership called "Dear Dawne". @goldendawne is an accomplished member of our community and she wants to help both the members of the Newbie Resteen Initiative and alse the "newbies" we serve.

Dawne will be regularly participating with us in a program called "Dear Dawne" where she will take comments, look directly at your posts and give you one on one suggestions, (and she will even go through your blog... How's that for being awesome!). Basically she wants to be your mentor and help you with ideas, formatting, access to resources, and even applying for various grants and delegations. Plus you can get "discovered" by a valued and connected member than can help you rise through the ranks!

Quick Facts About Dawne

Wow bro thanks. super useful this post, I also use some tools but very basic. really thank you very much!

I'm glad you like it @senteno77 :) ... If you would like to ask @goldendawne anything specifically, I'm sure she would be happy to help you!!!

Thank-you for putting this together Dave! I guess it's time to start formatting better. LOL i appreciate the nudge! A well formatted post is much more pleasant to read. Great to see you around 🦋

Hey @yogajill!! Always like seeing your cute little colorful emojis! (you are unique)

And yes formatting is important, @goldendawne has taught me many things about how to do it and its obvious to see the difference before and after I met her.

Do you want to ask Dawne any questions, she is here to help you in any way?

Good to see you Jill and keep that personality showing through with the way your express yourself with the emojis! ;)

This is exactly what I've been looking for! If you look at my posts you will see I'm a willing soul, but uneducated as to how to make my posts look GREAT. I will connect with Dawne, too. I do appreciate the help. Thanks.

Great on connecting with @goldendawne .. You can get her on discord or you can just tag her here too! She loves to help and if you ask her to look at a particular post, then I know she will (and she will help you too) ;)

ANy question you have, feel free to ask. Just tag me and I'll stop over

thanks @davemccoy has shared information about managing steemit well, as you say Dear Dawne will explain and help me as a beginner in steemit. because it takes the spirit, I often get discouraged because the weak powersteemd can not do anything, like a baby that keeps crawling constantly.
how do i get a big powersteem?

There are a few ways to get stronger/more SP or VP.

  1. Buy steem with your own money
  2. Get a delegation from another (bigger/whale) on the platform
  3. Continue to work steadily, make quality posts, get noticed by a curation page for more UPvoting payout

Hey @goldendawne
I might not be such a newbie anymore, but I’m glad I have the opportuntity to ask you a question about markdown.

I’m starting to know my way around it pretty good (I had some HTML background knowledge, that helped), but there's one thing I can’t seem to find an answer to. Do you perhaps know if there is a way to hyperlink images that you put in columns, or make floating with the ‘pull-left’ or ‘pull-right’ div code?

Yes there is a link above about the floating and images to the left and the right. I still have some issues with the left and right and have only done it a few times over my time on steemit.
Left and right centered images - but here is the link again that I have used in the past.

The floating goes fine. It’s just that inside the

tag, it seems impossible to add a hyperlink code.
Well, I’ll leep looking. Maybe I should look into combining Markdown and HTML a little more...

I know whenever I am looking for a new way to format, or need a little more help, I'll type in the specific words int he search box above... usually I can find what I need.

Have you checked in the FAQs section too?

Question#1. What cover photo sizes are best for posts on steemit?

My cover photos are always cut off the sides, and I never know how to crop a photo so the key center stuff isn't cut off in the thumbnail shown on the feed. Should I create a border a certain size? Any tips?

Question#2: How do I make floating images along text in the easiest way possible? Such as a newspaper article with a portrait photo of a featured writer or guest. Again, I am not sure about best photo size for viewing on different devices.

Question#3: Is there any way to make quicklinks to various parts within a post? Like jump to bottom or a header further down?

Sometimes I feel limited in making a quality layout. Let me know if you have any suggestions on things I can improve.

This was a helpful post. I am going to keep following.

Thank you both for Posting this information! I've been working hard to improve my formatting and if @goldendawne had not mentored me and helped get going when I first joined, I would probably still be flopping around like a plankton out of water. Upvoted and resteemed because I will need this reference going forward. Many others will too. For me, especially the dividers and columns. Super helpful. Thank you @davemccoy.
